Arnés between Natural Landscapes and Cultural Heritage

The Parc Natural dels Ports covers 63.5% of the municipality of Arnés. You can weigh nature, history, literary references, and local tradition as different focuses when planning your trip. It is precisely the combination of clearly identified landscape sites, historic buildings, and a distinctive festival tradition that makes the town interesting for curious explorations.

Nature and Trails

In the Els Ports natural area stands El Pimpoll, a tree designated by the Generalitat de Catalunya as a monumental tree. At the recreation area on the Algars River near Arnés, close to the Santa Madrona Hermitage, an easy path leads to the small La Palanca dam, where swimming is possible. From Arnés, you can also take trips to the Estrets d’Arnes.

Culture and History

The historic ensemble of Arnés was declared a cultural asset of cultural interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya on January 20, 1992, in the category of “historic ensemble.” The parish church of Santa Magdalena is Baroque and was built in 1693 over the ruins of a Gothic church.

The Povet de la Neu is a circular stone ice storehouse dating from the 17th to the 18th century; several information panels explain how it worked. The Santa Madrona Hermitage consists of a single rectangular nave, a three-sided polygonal apse, and a gallery. Arnés also has a Gothic castle at the intersection of Carrer Onze de Setembre and Carrer Major.

The cultural sites mentioned emphasize different aspects: the historic ensemble represents an officially designated category, Santa Magdalena combines Baroque design with the ruins of a Gothic church, and the Povet de la Neu makes its function understandable through several information panels. Santa Madrona, by contrast, draws attention to the rectangular nave, the three-sided polygonal apse, and the gallery. Classification, building history, technology, and spatial form thus stand side by side.

Literary Trail

A distinct cultural thread is provided by the literary route “Les bruixes d’Arnes”: it was inspired by David Martí’s novel of the same name. Alongside architectural history and the natural landscape, this adds a narrative perspective that you can include as a separate theme in your planning.
