Discover Benissanet: Ebro Trails, Culture and History

Benissanet is a place for routes that lead directly into its landscape and history. On stage 39 of the Camino Natural del Ebro, the de las Sènies trail takes hikers from Móra d’Ebre to the fertile orchards of Benissanet. From Benissanet, stage 39 continues along the T-324 road towards Miravet. The two directional descriptions help organise a planned day of hiking according to the respective section of the route.

Hiking

A literary perspective is provided by the Ruta literària Artur Bladé i Desumvila: using texts from his works, it leads to representative places in the writer Artur Bladé’s birthplace. At the same time, it is a cultural route through the streets of Benissanet. For planning purposes, you can consider the route and place formats separately: the hiking stage, literary cultural route and sacred local history have different focuses, without requiring any additional assumptions.

Stage 39 and the Ruta literària explore Benissanet in clearly different ways. On the Camino Natural del Ebro, the focus is on the route between Móra d’Ebre, Benissanet and Miravet; the literary route stays in the town’s streets, connecting texts with representative squares and places there. Both formats reveal different sides of the town without describing the same type of excursion.

Culture

At the centre of Benissanet stands the Church of Sant Joan Baptista. It was built after the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939, after the former church was destroyed in 1938. West of Benissanet lies the Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Pilar; it was formerly dedicated to Saint Barbara.

History and Local Traditions

In the Salvaterres area, at the foot of the Serra de la Vall de la Torre, stands the Torre de Cervelló, an old watchtower and defensive tower. Only slightly more than half of it remains; this includes, in particular, two battlemented walls on the northern and western sides, as well as part of the eastern wall.

The remains of a Moorish wall can be found on the Ebro. The La Font Gran air-raid shelter was built as a result of the Battle of the Ebro because of the constant bombing of the nearby crossings and, in part, the town itself.

Benissanet has a landing place on the Ebro River. The Fira de l’Auberge takes place in July; it presents more than fifty varieties of peaches grown in Benissanet and includes cultural and festive activities. The different approaches vary in terms of movement and subject: hiking, literature, architectural history, connections with the river and seasonal festive culture can be considered separate areas of focus.
