Discover Torroja del Priorat

The wines of Torroja del Priorat are protected by the DOC Priorat designation of origin. The town’s rugged terrain consists of Llicorella slate soils, which are suitable for viticulture. Celler Aixalà i Alcait is a small family winery in Torroja del Priorat, founded in 2005. Terroir al Límit offers three exclusive guided tasting experiences there. Visits to Terroir al Límit can be requested and booked in Spanish and English.

Culture and Local History

The parish church of Sant Miquel is Neoclassical, features some Baroque elements, and was built between 1766 and 1767. The church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel is classified as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest, known as BCIL, and has been included in the Catalan Cultural Heritage Inventory.

The organ of Sant Miquel was built around 1800 by the French organ builder Jean Pierre Cavaillé and combines French Romantic and Catalan elements. The restored organ of Sant Miquel is listed in Catalonia’s organ catalogue.

Cal Compte is a large 19th-century manor house containing the remains of a private oratory. Torroja del Priorat originated and grew around a fire tower that controlled the crossing of the Siurana River.

The original street layout of Torroja del Priorat is cross-shaped and includes circular routes around the town. Torroja del Priorat had more than 225 houses with their own names. The house names are currently being restored and placed on the façades; they are considered part of the town’s ethnological heritage.

Festivals and Observations

Nit de Vins includes a public wine tasting and a small craft market. The municipal government of Torroja del Priorat holds Nit de Vins on the third Saturday in August, and the town’s wineries take part.

During Nit de Sant Joan, a large bonfire is lit at l’Era. The Associació Astronòmica de Torroja del Priorat is dedicated to outreach, education, and photographic practice focused on the deep sky and the Solar System.

La Font Vella is a recreational area near the town that is used for dance events in summer.

Landscape and Trails

The GR-174, also known as Sender del Priorat, crosses the municipality of Torroja del Priorat. The road from Falset leads via the T-710 to Gratallops and then via the T-711 to Torroja del Priorat.

Route 11 runs mostly along forest tracks and offers views of Montsant, the Sierra de la Figuera, as well as Gratallops and Torroja del Priorat. Torroja del Priorat is reached at kilometre 6.59 on Route 11; at kilometre 8.50, water bottles can be refilled in the town if needed.
