Els Pallaresos: Jujol Architecture, Landscape and Holiday Apartments

Since 2020, “Els Pallaresos 1900” has been a modernist historical re-enactment event in Camp de Tarragona. The town combines architectural history with a landscape of foothills, forests and agricultural land.

Culture

The architectural history of Els Pallaresos includes Casa Bofarull, a former masia that was remodelled by Josep M. Jujol from 1914 onwards. Its defining features include a tower crowned by an angel and a gallery with arabesque-style arches.

The former town hall and former schools were converted into today’s Centre Jujol to commemorate the work of architect Josep M. Jujol in Els Pallaresos. The parish church of Sant Salvador is a Baroque building in transition towards Neoclassicism and was consecrated in 1796.

Between 1944 and 1947, Josep M. Jujol worked on Sant Salvador. This included the tabernacle and the side altars with remarkable wrought-iron work. Jujol remodelled Casa Andreu Fortuny between 1920 and 1927 and again in 1944. On the first floor, the building has windows with curved lintels and balustrades, while the ground floor features a distinctive three-part balcony. A fountain dating from 1863 is also set into the façade.

Landscape

Els Pallaresos is sheltered by the coastal foothills. The uncultivated half of the municipality is covered by pine forests and garrigue. Traditional dry farming includes the cultivation of hazelnuts, almonds, carob, olives and grapevines. Culture and landscape therefore stand alongside one another as distinct focal points.

Experiences

The Parc Infantil de la Font de la Mina is a recreational area for children in Els Pallaresos. For active days, one hiking route describes the journey from Camp de Tarragona station to Tarragona station; it passes through Els Pallaresos and follows roads and paths between hazelnut fields and forests.
