Bellvei: Murals, Festivals and Dry-Stone Paths

Bellvei combines contemporary mural art with traditional festivals, churches and rural paths. The project Colors i versos als carrers comprises murals created in the streets of Bellvei in 2024 and 2025, focusing on the life and traditions of the town. Each mural was painted by Maria Martos and accompanied by verses by Anna Molina. At the same time, Bellvei is surrounded by vineyards, grain fields and Mediterranean forests.

Culture and History

The present-day church of Santa Maria de Bellvei was built in the 17th century after the previous church disappeared; from 1859 onwards, it became an independent parish. The church has a single nave and features a barrel vault and side chapels. The façade has a portal with a straight lintel and a rectangular window with a stone lintel, stone jambs and a stone sill. Above it rises a belfry with two arches, whose bells are dated 1738.

The Torre de Bellvei, also known as Torre de Cal Roig, is incorporated into the Cal Roig building. It can be associated with the former fortification of Bellvei, first documented in 1037. The Mas de la Muga retains a square tower with battlements and machicolations, as well as two cylindrical towers with attached turrets and pointed roofs.

Local crafts include the Gorra de cop, attributed to the basket maker Roc Vidal, who settled in Bellvei around 1800. Bellvei is described as the only place in Catalonia where Gorres de cop are made. Workshops for making Gorres de cop are regarded as a distinctive craft and cultural form of expression in Bellvei; they are intended to preserve, promote and pass on this local heritage. The figure Dona d'aigua associated with Bellvei represents a water fairy who, in Catalan mythology, is connected with rivers and pools.

Festivals and Figures

Bellvei's Festa Major is dedicated to Santa Maria and includes cultural events, dances, music and community gatherings. The Corpus festival includes laying floral carpets in Carrer Sant Joan, as well as a Corpus Christi procession with children who have celebrated their First Communion.

Tonet and Mariona are Bellvei's two big-head figures. They represent children and wear made-to-measure clothing that imitates the clothes worn by children from wealthy families at the beginning of the 20th century. Their ensemble includes four smaller Nans representing spring, summer, winter, and night and day. The Festa del Diabló is aimed mainly at children and young people from the small devil groups of the comarca. The Festa Major Petita includes a Mostra d'oficis artesans, an exhibition dedicated to traditional crafts.

Nature, Paths and Transport

The rural paths in Bellvei are suitable for walks and hikes. The route Ruta de la pedra seca a Bellvei passes by Castell de la Muga and leads to 11 dry-stone structures in Bellvei, including huts and a well with a dry-stone-built shaft. The different focuses of walking routes, hikes and dry-stone architecture offer several ways to explore the surroundings.

Bellvei is located on the historic N-340 and less than ten minutes from the access roads to the AP-7 and the Pau Casals motorway. A bus network connects the town with neighbouring cities; rail connections are available via the Sant Vicenç de Calders and El Vendrell stations.

Culinary Heritage

Bellvei's culinary heritage includes wine, olive oil and cured meats.
