La Palma D'ebre: Pi de la Palma and Almond Blossom

La Palma d’Ebre is home to a remarkable natural feature: the Pi de la Palma, also known as Pi del Pino, stands about 300 m from the town on a ridge running northwards and is more than 400 years old. Its trunk circumference is between 5.15 and 7.75 m; the Pi de la Palma is considered to be the tree with the thickest trunk in Catalonia. On 1 April 1991, the Government of Catalonia recognised the Pi de la Palma as a monumental tree.

La Palma d’Ebre is associated with the blossoming of the almond trees in spring. A visitor experience during this season includes a walk with vermouth tasting and an aperitif among the blossoming almond trees.

Culture

The present-day parish church, Església Parroquial de l'Assumpció, in La Palma d’Ebre was begun in 1802 in the Renaissance style and inaugurated in 1823. During Holy Week, the Grup d’Armats group in La Palma d’Ebre takes part in processions and church services. Beneath the lower floors of the Casa de la Vila is a former 15th-century prison with thick stone walls and a pointed-arch vault.

In La Palma d’Ebre, nature and local culinary culture stand alongside the town’s history, religious architecture and traditions. The Pi de la Palma, the almond blossom, the parish church, the Holy Week processions and the historic space of the Casa de la Vila offer different perspectives on the town. The troglodytic houses along the hiking route add a distinctive architectural detail to these features of the town. A signposted family hike in the area around La Palma d’Ebre is 6.64 km long, has an ascent of 165 m and a descent of 165 m, and takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. At one point along the hiking route, the troglodytic houses embedded in caves, referred to as “Cueva del porreranos”, can be seen.
