Culture and History

The Sant Marçal church stands at the highest point of the village centre. It is listed in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Inside, the old church preserves a decorated, lidless ossuary dating from the 14th century.

Another testimony to the local past is the Sínia de Sant Marçal, located on the old road from Sant Marçal to Múnia. The external gear drive and the mechanism connected to the animal that powered the well mechanism have been preserved. This means that at this historic site, not only the location but also its former operation remains visible.

The local festival tradition includes the figures Marçal and Montanyans, who appear as the Gegants de Sant Marçal. The pair represents agriculture and civilisation in Roman times and refers to archaeological finds from that period in the centre of Sant Marçal. The Drac de Sant Marçal was also built by local residents, in 1983. It appears at the Festa Major de Sant Marçal and in several places in the Penedès. The Gegants de Sant Marçal currently take part in the Festa Major de Sant Marçal and in several regional giants’ gatherings.

Festivals

The Festa Major de Sant Marçal is celebrated in honour of Sant Marçal on the second weekend of July. In the evening, a Correfoc takes place, followed by fireworks and then a dance or concert. The sequence combines the traditional fire event with a subsequent programme of events.

The Festa d’hivern de Sant Marçal is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and takes place during the holiday period of the Puríssima Concepció. This winter festival includes a procession and a dance by the Gegants de Sant Marçal. In the afternoon, the celebration ends with a theatre performance. For festivals held during a set period, current date information is among the most important planning details.

Hiking and Activities

A public hike through the area around Sant Marçal is organised on the Saturday before the Festa Major de Sant Marçal weekend. The VII. Pujada a Montanyans offered a 13 km route that could be completed by running or walking. Anyone planning to take part in a public hike should check the date, route and current conditions before travelling.

Wine and Estate

Oriol Rossell offers visitors tastings of its wines and cavas. The range also includes visitor experiences for discovering the winery. These offerings incorporate the history of Cal Cassanyes and connect the wine with the estate and its past.

Oriol Rossell is located on the Propietat Cal Cassanyes estate, s/n, in Sant Marçal, Castellet i la Gornal. For tastings and winery experiences, current opening hours and any possible event dates should be checked before visiting.
