Malgrat de Mar: Beaches, History and Nature

Malgrat de Mar has more than 4.5 kilometres of equipped beaches with white sand.

Coast and Nature

Malgrat de Mar lies between the sea, the eastern hills, the Montnegre Massif, and the Tordera River and Delta. The town's landscapes include the floodplain and beaches, as well as the hills and slopes of Montnegre.

The Playa, Pla de Grau y Delta del Tordera hike passes through the town's agricultural area, to the dunes on La Conca Beach and the Tordera Delta. This hike includes an observation tower in the area of La Punta del Tordera Beach, which is used for observing birds and ducks. The area of the Can Palomeres mines is integrated into the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

The hike connects several named areas of the Tordera region in succession: the town's agricultural area, the dunes on La Conca Beach and the Tordera Delta. The observation tower in the area of La Punta del Tordera Beach adds another named point to this route description.

Parks

The Parc Francesc Macià features giant figures with childlike themes, some up to five metres tall. The Parc Francesc Macià is fully accessible and has gentle, easy-to-walk paths without barriers. The Parc del Castell is located on a hill and offers panoramic views over the municipality.

History

The present-day Església Parroquial de Sant Nicolau was completed in 1783. The nave of the Església Parroquial de Sant Nicolau, 45 metres long and 24 metres wide, is known as the “Catedral de la Costa”.

The Casal dels Clapers was built at the end of the 16th century as a manor house and residence of the noble Clapers family. In 1998, the Casal dels Clapers was converted into the Biblioteca Municipal La Cooperativa. The Torre del Castell has been documented since 1382 and was connected with the Castillo de Palafolls.

Connections and Routes

Malgrat de Mar railway station is located opposite Malgrat Centro Beach. It offers connections to Barcelona and the metropolitan area, to Girona and as far as the French border.

The Turó d'en Serra y Minas de Can Palomeres route is of medium difficulty due to the difference in elevation that has to be covered over a short distance. Entering the mines is not permitted because of the danger they pose. The section of the Tourdera route from Malgrat de Mar to Palafolls can be travelled by bicycle or on foot.

Summer Festival

The Fiesta Mayor de Sant Roc is Malgrat de Mar's main summer festival today. Its highlight coincides with the feast day of Saint Roch on 16 August.
