Esparreguera: Discover Culture, Ceramics and Nature

In Esparreguera, La Passió d'Esparreguera is staged every year during Holy Week, between March and May, in a total of nine performances. The earliest documented performances date back to the early 17th century; La Passió is rooted in a centuries-old folk tradition that connects the Middle Ages with the 21st century.

Culture and History

At 63 metres, the Campanar d'Esparreguera is the second-highest parish church bell tower in Catalonia. It is accessed through the interior of the parish church of Santa Eulàlia. The tower comprises a reception room, a weights room, a clock room, the belfry, the balcony and the dome. The apse and the right-hand side chapel of Santa Maria del Puig have been converted into a museum; they display a pre-Romanesque apse, a partially pre-Romanesque section of the side wall and several burials. The Aplec del Puig takes place at Santa Maria del Puig every Easter Monday.

Museums and Visitor Information

The Museu de la Colònia Sedó is located in the municipality of Esparreguera on the right bank of the Llobregat River. On display are a model of the settlement with a light-and-sound presentation and a three-dimensional audiovisual medium projected inside the turbine's water supply pipe. The museum is temporarily closed due to museographic improvement works. Its expected reopening date is 7 November 2026. At the Museu de la Colònia Sedó, guided tours are available on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays by prior telephone reservation. The colony can be reached by La Hispano Igualadina bus as far as Esparreguera; from there, a 2.3-kilometre walk along Carrer del Mestre Tomàs Cabeza, also known as Riera del Puig, takes about half an hour to reach the colony.

Crafts and Industrial Heritage

The Espai de la Terrissa preserves the last surviving wood-fired kiln for ceramic production in the town, which belonged to Terrisseria Sedó, as well as a collection of traditional and utilitarian ceramic pieces from the town's various pottery workshops. The transformation of clay into objects has been a continuous activity in the Esparreguera area since the 16th century. On the Ruta de la ceràmica, visitors can view ceramic decorations on the façades of the houses; the route ends with a visit to the active workshop les Ceràmiques Sedó. The Ruta dels invents provides an insight into Esparreguera's industrial, scientific and technological heritage. The literary route refers to “Un camí fràgil” by Antònia Galceran i Monné.

Nature and Geology

The Mirador del Mas Manader is located at an altitude of about 400 metres on the ridge of the Serra de Can Rubió. Els Blaus, also known as Roques Blaves, is a protected geological natural area around the Riera del Puig and the Torrent del Puig; it was formed by movement along a major fault. On the Ruta geològica, visitors can discover rocks and minerals such as tufa and pyrite, geological structures such as faults and stratigraphic gaps, as well as various terraces of the Llobregat. The Ruta natural runs along rural paths to Mas Manader; along the way, visitors can observe native flora and various geological features.
