Sant Martí Sarroca: Romanesque Architecture, Karst Landscape and Winegrowing

Culture and History

The Sant Martí monumental complex comprises the Castell dels Santmartí castle and the Santa Maria church. Together, the two buildings form an outstanding example of Catalan Romanesque architecture. Both are classified as Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN). The complex thus combines a castle complex and a religious building in a shared historic ensemble.

Within the monumental complex of Sant Martí Sarroca, Castell dels Santmartí remains closed until further notice. Occasional themed visits will be announced.

Sarroca Medieval takes place every year in October around Sa Roca.

Nature and Landscape

Les Valls lies between the hill known as turó de la Roca and the adjacent mountain. The landscape combines the distinctive features of a limestone karst relief with rock faces, karst caves and rock shelters. Between the hill and the mountain, these different formations appear as components of the same karst relief.

The formations of this karst relief even include a perforated rock formation. Sant Martí Sarroca also has a significant group of natural freshwater springs.

Dry-stone walls and dry-stone huts characterize the agricultural wine-growing landscape of Sant Martí Sarroca. They are therefore part of the landscape in which winegrowing is visibly connected with traditional rural structures.

Historic Paths and Experiences

Sant Martí Sarroca has a network of historic paths. This network connects old village centres with remote masies and also serves for recreation and experiencing the landscape. The paths thus link historic settlement connections with the rural surroundings of the scattered masies.

The network includes, among others, the old road to Vilafranca and the paths from les Cases Noves to els Hostalets and La Bleda. The paths of Conilleres, Ferriol and els Hostalets are also part of it.

The outdoor visit experience at Sa Roca complements the visit to the natural landscape of Camí de Les Valls via the old castle path. This experience therefore places the historic connection and the landscape of Les Valls jointly at the centre.

Wine and Cuisine

The traditional visit to Can Lleó de Vilanoveta also includes a walk through the vineyards. During the walk, visitors get to know winegrowing at close range. The visit thus combines an insight into the cellar area with the vineyards where the grapes are grown.

Can Lleó de Vilanoveta offers cellar tours by prior reservation. These are scheduled from Monday to Sunday. The visit is therefore subject to advance booking and the specified days of the week.

Cava Rovellats offers the “Visita Reserva” tour. Advance booking is required for the Visita Reserva. The tour is offered daily at 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30. The offering combines the name of the tour with three fixed times each day.

The third edition of SarrocaTast will take place on 13 June 2026. SarrocaTast is an enogastronomic evening featuring tastings of offerings from the municipality’s wineries and restaurants. The venue will once again be Sant Martí Sarroca Castle.
