Sant Joan Despí: Modernism and Routes

In Sant Joan Despí, Route 4, which is 6.6 kilometres long, forms part of the network of healthy routes. It connects the four city parks Parc de la Fontsanta, Torreblanca, Marta Mata and Mil·lenari. The route is signposted.

Routes and parks

All four routes in the network of healthy routes start at Parc de la Fontsanta. A map there shows the course of each route. It also indicates the distance of each route.

One municipal route is called “De torrent a parc”. It combines environmental and historical education. It illustrates the agricultural past of the Samontà. It also explains its development into today’s metropolitan park. The metropolitan park is closely connected with the Les Planes and Residencial Sant Joan neighbourhoods.

Culture and architecture

Josep Maria Jujol’s interventions in Iglesia Sant Joan Baptista include biblical inscriptions on the pulpits. Torre de la Creu is designated as a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional. It is also designated as a historic monument. Torre de la Creu is a work by the modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol. Josep Maria Jujol was one of Antoni Gaudí’s collaborators.

Torre de la Creu was built between 1913 and 1916 as a summer residence. Its construction comprises five circular cylinders. A modernist tour includes, among other things, guided visits to Can Negre, Torre de la Cruz, Torre Jujol and Casa Cebrià Camprubí.

The Fontsanta/Fatjó tram stop is indicated for Torre de la Creu. The associated lines are T1 and T2.

During the Festa Major, people dance to songs by Versión Imposible in Parc de la Fontsanta. This dancing is considered a tradition.

Geographical setting

A route along the Llobregat River conveys the character of the lower valley. It also explains that the river served as an access route into the interior of Catalonia. In the Middle Ages, the river served as a natural border.
