Sant Llorenç d'Hortons: Churches, Vineyards and Terrazel

The present-day Església de Sant Llorenç in Sant Llorenç d'Hortons was built between 1845 and 1847. Its single-nave layout, semicircular apse and side chapels between the buttresses form part of this structure; the square bell tower has an octagonal upper section. The church of Sant Llorenç d'Hortons was first documented in 945. Visible remains of the former Romanesque church have been preserved inside the Rectoria de Sant Llorenç d'Hortons.

Culture and history

La Bassa Gran has its present-day appearance as a result of the 1911 renovation and comprises a fountain and a basin with design elements influenced by Modernisme. Historically, La Bassa Gran consisted of a fountain, an irrigation basin and a facility set up as a washing place; in summer, it was a popular meeting place. The fountain and the covered washing place in Parc de Cal Sant Just were built at the beginning of the 19th century. In the past, surplus water was used to irrigate the nearby gardens. Traces of stone extraction are still visible at the Pedrera romana de la Rierussa.

Terrazel is considered the central performance of the Festa Major of Sant Llorenç d'Hortons every year on 10 August; it was created and performed by local residents. The street festival includes animal figures, giant figures, large masks, music and fire, and encourages reflection on the destruction of the environment. Sant Llorenç d'Hortons Town Hall serves as a tourist information office.

Local products

The local products of Sant Llorenç d'Hortons include wine, oil, Cava, ceramics and paintings. Cellar tours and pairing experiences are also offered. Casa Gran at Celler St Joannes dates back to 1453. The hermitage of Sant Joan Bautista next to Casa Gran is Romanesque, was built in the 11th century and extended in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Romanesque church of Sant Joan Samora has been documented since 1080 and is well preserved. Espiga is a naturally brewed craft beer produced locally in the heart of the Penedès.

Landscape and trails

The Salt de La Pedrera waterfall is approximately 15 metres high; the geological surroundings contain Miocene marine sediments and marine fossils. The Camí de la Garnatxa reaches Sant Llorenç d'Hortons and joins the GR 5 at the entrance to the town. The GR-S route from Sant Llorenç d'Hortons passes through vineyards, crosses a river and runs along a wooded ridge with farmhouses. At Celler St Joannes, you can walk to the vineyards and enjoy views of Montserrat.
