Culture and History

Cubelles Castle has been documented since 1041 and was built on the remains of an ancient Roman villa. In 1949, Cubelles Castle was classified as a cultural asset of national interest. The castle houses a permanent exhibition about the clown Charlie Rivel, who was born in Cubelles. It displays parts of his costume, awards, photographs of performances and other documents. A visit therefore covers both the history of the building and the memory of an artist born in Cubelles. The costume pieces, awards and performance photographs on display complement the documents relating to Charlie Rivel’s career. At Can Travé, Frederic Travé established a library specialising in classical mythology, a natural history cabinet and a botanical garden. The library, cabinet and botanical garden each represent a separate part of this establishment: classical mythology, natural sciences and plants.

Nature and Coast

The natural area at the mouth of the Riu Foix in Cubelles belongs to the Natura 2000 network and is designated as a ZEPA special protection area for birds. The wetland at the mouth covers approximately 10 hectares and contains lagoons, reed beds, tamarisk stands and wet meadows. Guided visits are offered at the mouth, explaining the changes to the river, beach and coastal lagoon. Places are limited, and reservations are required. These visits therefore consider the river, beach and coastal lagoon together. The landscape at the mouth includes not only open water areas but also reeds, tamarisks and wet meadows. An old machine-gun nest from the Spanish Civil War has been preserved on one of Cubelles’ beaches. Thus, alongside the natural area, the coast also contains a preserved testimony to recent history.

Getting Around Cubelles

The Ruta per la natura. Itinerari 2 is a circular route starting from Cubelles. The trail is slightly more than eight kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 160 metres. The route connects the starting point in Cubelles with a trail designed as a circular route, whose length is just over eight kilometres. The stated elevation difference is 160 metres.

Food and Festivals

Xató is a typical dish of Penedès Marítim and is prepared with produce from horticulture and the sea. Cubermut is a vermouth and aperitif fair in Cubelles featuring tastings, samplings and workshops. The Festa Major Petita de Sant Abdó i Sant Senén takes place on 30 July as a traditional festival in honour of Cubelles’ patron saints. The Festa Major de la Mare de Déu d’Agost includes street processions, dances, human towers, fire runs, concerts and activities for all age groups. Local culinary traditions therefore include both the dish Xató and the Cubermut vermouth and aperitif fair. Cubermut’s programme includes tastings, samplings and workshops. The Festa Major Petita is associated with 30 July and Cubelles’ patron saints, while the Festa Major de la Mare de Déu d’Agost features a programme of processions, dances, human towers, fire runs and concerts.
