Discover Capolat: plateaus, churches and circular routes

Capolat is divided into three plateaus at different elevations, connected by the Serra dels Tossals. Along its southeastern boundary, the municipality is characterised by steep slopes and lies around 200 metres above the plains of Berga and Avià.

Landscape and nature

The three plateaus of Capolat are popularly known in the region as “les tres maries”. The plateaus of Taravil lie between 1,300 and 1,500 metres above sea level and dominate the plain of l'Espunyola and Montmajor. The Serra dels Tossals and 48% of the rest of Capolat have been part of the Natura network since 2006.

The Salt de Sallent waterfall lies on the boundary between Capolat and l'Espunyola and has a drop of approximately 35 metres. In the “Pantans i turons” area, the bed of the watercourse is colonised by stands of Myriophyllum, which are listed as a habitat of Community interest. The clarity and high water quality make the watercourse an important breeding area for amphibians, especially several newt species.

Culture and history

Sant Martí de Coforb is first mentioned in 839 and retains a large part of its medieval walls. The present building of Sant Quintí de Taravil appears to date entirely from the 18th century. Inside, there is a Baroque or Neoclassical altarpiece.

Sant Serni de Terrers has been documented since the Middle Ages and retains a large part of its northern wall from that period. The first explicit mention of Capolat Castle dates from 1065. At an elevation of 1,455 metres are the ruins of the Santuari dels Tossals, which form a viewpoint.

Sant Andreu de la Serreta is a small Romanesque church. The floor plan of its nave may date from the 10th century. On its western side, Sant Andreu de la Serreta has a massive-looking bell gable with two openings.

Trails and activities

A section of the GR1 long-distance trail crosses the municipality of Capolat. The Serra dels Tossals can be explored on a circular route offering privileged views and a natural setting. The “Pantans i turons” route is marked with the yellow signs of the Berguedà trail network.

The climb to Port de Mal Pas de Capolat is 5.1 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 444 metres. On the climb to Mal Pas de Capolat, the road passes through the Balcó de Santa Aina between large rock walls. The “Fes-te el teu ram” activity at Niudàlia allows you to choose flowers, receive advice on arranging the bouquet, pick the flowers and take the finished bouquet with you.
