Culture

The Museu del Cau Ferrat in Sitges was founded in 1893 by Santiago Rusiñol as a home and studio, and converted into a public museum in 1933.

The activities organised by Rusiñol at Cau Ferrat, with the participation of artists, musicians and writers, made the house a temple of Modernisme.

The artistic and monumental Maricel complex was built between 1910 and 1918 by Miquel Utrillo for Charles Deering and is considered one of the earliest major examples of Noucentisme.

The Palau de Maricel, the Museu de Maricel and Can Rocamora form a heritage-listed ensemble.

The interior of the Palau de Maricel is distinctly Modernist in design and combines various styles and materials; the exterior area includes a cloister and terraces facing the Mediterranean.

The Museu Romàntic Can Llopis is housed in a Neoclassical building constructed in 1793.

Its dioramas illustrate everyday life and popular traditions of the 19th century.

The Fundació Stämpfli collection comprises more than 90 works by 60 artists from 22 different nationalities.

Festivals and Film

The Festa Major de Sitges is recognised as a festival of national heritage interest and is celebrated in honour of Sant Bartomeu on 24 August and Santa Tecla on 23 September.

The Carnaval de Sitges is recognised as a festival of national tourist interest and takes place in the week before Ash Wednesday.

The Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya began in 1968 as an international week of fantasy and horror films.

History and Flavour

The Centre d'Interpretació de la Malvasia de Sitges is located in the former Corral de la Vila, a livestock building dating from the 18th century.

Malvasia de Sitges is a distinctive and special local grape variety that was produced for decades in the wine cellar of Hospital Sant Joan Baptista.

Landscape and Coast

In the wider region around Sitges, Parc del Garraf offers a Mediterranean landscape with viewpoints and hiking routes.

The Jardins de Terramar are gardens designed in the Noucentisme style in the 1920s with the involvement of Miquel Utrillo.
