Discover Sant Jaume de Frontanyà

The PR-C51 is a 9.130-kilometre circular hiking trail in the centre of the municipality of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà. It is part of the network of hiking trails approved, signposted and maintained by the FEEC. The long-distance GR-241 trail crosses Sant Jaume de Frontanyà from southeast to northwest and runs through the town centre. The GR-241 is a 59.46-kilometre circular trail around the Catllaràs Massif and is divided into four stages. Its route passes through Borredà, Vilada, La Nou de Berguedà, Castell de l’Areny and Sant Jaume de Frontanyà.

Hiking and trails

Three livestock drovers’ routes are designated in Sant Jaume de Frontanyà. These drovers’ routes may also be used for walking and hiking; livestock movements have priority.

Culture and history

The Església romànica de Sant Jaume de Frontanyà is an 11th-century building and an example of Lombard Romanesque architecture in Catalonia. At the intersection of the nave and transept, the Església de Sant Jaume de Frontanyà has a twelve-sided crossing tower. It is considered unique in Catalonia.

The Església Vella de Sant Jaume de Frontanyà was the municipality’s first parish church. Bishop Antigis of La Seu d’Urgell consecrated it in 905 in honour of the apostle Sant Jaume. Remains of the eastern wall have survived. There may also be remains of an adjacent cemetery beside it. The Església Vella can be reached via the Camí de Faig i Branca, shortly beyond the Collet de Creu Melosa.

Sant Esteve de Tubau is a pre-Romanesque church with a single nave facing east. Its trapezoidal apse is slightly offset from the main axis. The Santuari de la Mare de Déu dels Oms is a building erected in 1785. It was built over a small Romanesque structure dating from the 13th century. The Aplec del Dilluns de Pasqua Florida takes place at the Santuari dels Oms.

The Font de la Mola consists of a millstone, making it one of the particularly distinctive sites in the town centre. It is located next to the church in the centre of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà.

The Trobada de Santjaumesos was normally held on the first Saturday in September. It included a shared meal, a concert and dancing.

Landscape and nature

The eastern slope of the Serra del Catllaràs lies west of the town centre of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà; its focal point is at Creu Melosa. The Riera del Molí drains the central slopes of the municipality of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà.

The landscape around Sant Jaume de Frontanyà is shaped by the steep cliff of Les Forques, which is approximately 1,210 metres high. The landscape of the Serra del Catllaràs is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Scots pine forests are characteristic of the area. At higher elevations, there are also stands of black pine and beech forests with boxwood. More than 30 orchid species occur there, as do deer.
