Tordera: Trails, Wetlands and Festivals

Active pursuits

The natural area around Tordera offers various hiking and mountain biking routes where you can discover small hermitages, the remains of dolmens and an Iberian settlement. The “Tordera en ruta” project comprises a collection of marked paths and trails in the natural area of the municipality of Tordera. It promotes physical activity and healthy habits. Every circular route in the project starts at Parc de la Sardana.

The Les alzines de Can Portell circular route runs through Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor near Hortsavinyà. It is marked with white-and-green signs and the designation SL-C 73. The route is 2,974 m long and takes approximately one hour. It has a steep gradient and partly follows old forest tracks and forestry roads. The route is recommended for all age groups. Its facilities include information panels in Braille.

The R1 coastal railway line, which runs between Molins de Rei–Maçanet–Massanes, stops in Tordera and provides access to the Montnegre i el Corredor area.

Nature

The Riu i Estanys de Tordera protected area includes the riverbank along the lower course of the Tordera as well as small lagoons. These lagoons include l’Estany de can Torrent, la Júlia and l’Estany de cal Raba. Its landscape is characterised by predominant marsh and riverside vegetation. This vegetation includes shrubs, grassland and reeds. The protected area is also home to a remarkable diversity of amphibians and reptiles.

At the mouth of the Tordera, the river forms a lagoon. A sand and gravel bank separates this lagoon from the sea. L’estany de Can Torrent is one of the intact wetlands that have been preserved in the Tordera floodplain. Els aiguamolls de Cal Raba are designated as an excursion destination in Tordera.

Events

The Mercat de Tordera, with roots dating back centuries, takes place every Sunday morning throughout the year. The Fira Mercat del Ram has been held for more than a hundred years on the weekend of Palm Sunday. For around fifty years, it has been held at Parc Prudenci Bertrana. The Fira retains the character of a traditional multisectoral exhibition. It includes the Mostra d’Associacionisme Local. This means that Tordera’s calendar features both a regular Sunday event and a long-established event on Palm Sunday weekend; the Fira has also been held at Parc Prudenci Bertrana for around fifty years.

Culture

The remains of the Sant Pere de Riu aqueduct can be seen in Tordera as the Pont del Diable. Mongeta del ganxet is a product with a protected designation of origin (PDO). The product is produced in Maresme. It is widely represented in the cuisine of the Tordera region.
