Els Hostalets de Pierola – Culture, Trails and Landscape

Trails

Four signposted circular trails have been established around the municipality of Els Hostalets de Pierola, designed especially for walking. The "Ruta del Modernisme i paisatge" through Els Hostalets de Pierola is easy and flat. Its main attractions include modernist heritage and views of Montserrat. The Cal Ponsa forest is the endpoint of the treasure-hunt route through Els Hostalets de Pierola. This provides trails with different thematic focuses: one route combines modernism and landscape, while the other takes the form of a treasure hunt leading to the Cal Ponsa forest.

Nature

The Riera de Pierola, together with the Riera de Claret, is one of the most important watercourses in the municipality of Els Hostalets de Pierola. It cuts deep hollows and valleys into the terrain, giving the area a highly irregular relief. La Gorra Frígia is a peak near Els Hostalets de Pierola. Montgròs is a peak near Els Hostalets de Pierola. El Camell de Sant Jeroni is a peak near Els Hostalets de Pierola. L'Albarda Castellana is a peak near Els Hostalets de Pierola. Like the watercourses, these peaks are located around Els Hostalets de Pierola and complement the landscape, which is characterised by hollows, valleys and irregular relief.

Culture and History

The Festa de la Verema in September is one of the local traditions of Els Hostalets de Pierola. The "Estiuejants i Modernisme als Hostalets de Pierola" route presents the history of the buildings commissioned in the town by members of the bourgeoisie and by the so-called "africanos" and "americanos". The old Sant Pere de Pierola church complex comprises three distinct elements: a religious building with Romanesque and Baroque construction phases, a rectory with the appearance of a farmhouse, and a cemetery. Thus, alongside the September tradition, the local history and the architectural history of the buildings are also central to the cultural attractions mentioned.

The remains of Castell de Pierola lie on a hill approximately 150 m east of Can Palomas. They include several sturdy walls made of irregular local stone and mortar, as well as numerous fragments of Arab roof tiles. Castell de Pierola was first documented in 963. From the 10th to the 12th century, it belonged to the Viscounts of Barcelona. Both structural elements of the former fortification and roof-tile fragments have survived, while the documented history of Castell de Pierola reaches back to the 10th century.
