Manresa: La Seu, Ignatian Heritage and Anella Verda

Culture

Manresa is home to the Basilica of Santa Maria de Manresa. It is a Gothic church known as “La Seu”. It was designed by the master builder Berenguer de Montagut. “La Seu” houses the Retaule del Sant Esperit. The work dates from 1394 and was created by the workshop of the Serra brothers from Barcelona.

A guided tour takes place in “La Seu” every Saturday. It begins at 11:00 a.m.

Museums

The Museu de l'Aigua i el Tèxtil de Manresa houses two permanent exhibitions. They are entitled “La Sèquia i l'aigua” and “La cinteria”. The two exhibitions therefore focus on the themes of water and ribbon weaving, which are already reflected in the museum's name.

The Museu del Barroc de Catalunya displays almost 200 works of art. The works on display include paintings, sculptures, altarpieces and decorative art. The artworks come from various museums and collections throughout the country. A visit to the Museu del Barroc de Catalunya ends in an immersive audiovisual room.

Spiritual Heritage

The Camí Ignasià connects Azpeitia in the Basque Country with Manresa. Azpeitia is the home of Ignatius of Loyola. The route thus establishes a connection between the saint's place of origin and Manresa.

According to tradition, Ignatius of Loyola withdrew to the Cova de Sant Ignasi for a time. There, he meditated and wrote the famous Spiritual Exercises. The Cova is therefore associated both with his temporary retreat and with the writing of these works.

The Cova de Sant Ignasi features decorative elements. Its decoration combines the Baroque of the Manresan school of sculpture with the Modernisme of Josep Llimona. The two styles mentioned and the person named are part of the description of the interior decoration.

The route “Manresa universal, la ciutat de Sant Ignasi” passes through a series of places. These places are shaped by anecdotes, legends and symbolic references to Ignatius of Loyola. Its connection therefore arises not only from a single attraction, but from several stops with narrative and symbolic links.
