Castelldefels: Beach, Culture and Nature

Coast and beach

Playa de Castelldefels has a total length of 4,840 metres and an average width of 100 metres along its entire continuous stretch.

It consists of three beaches, each named after the respective neighbourhoods.

Baixador and Lluminetes are sections of Playa de Castelldefels; both have been awarded the Blue Flag.

The award stands, among other things, for sustainable management and bathing-water quality; accessibility, safety, services and facilities are also among the criteria.

Nature and trails

Castelldefels is a gateway to the protected Parc Natural del Garraf.

The nature park offers hiking trails and cycling routes; it is also possible to observe native flora and fauna there.

Within the city, there are eight municipal hiking trails that provide access to urban and natural areas.

The hike along the watchtowers of Castelldefels leads from the town centre to the stop; it then returns via the beach. Its route therefore connects a starting point in the city centre, a section along the watchtowers and the return journey by the sea.

It is 13 kilometres long, takes around four hours and has a total elevation gain of 145 metres.

Its difficulty level is moderate.

Water and circuit

At the Canal Olímpico de Cataluña, canoeing and rowing are possible; water skiing and cable water skiing are also available.

Other activities include windsurfing, padel, kayaking and wakeboarding.

Boats can also be rented for a trip on the canal.

The paved circuit around the canal is 2,800 metres long. Its firm surface and enclosed route clearly distinguish it from the activities taking place directly on the water.

Culture and history

The construction of Castell de Castelldefels dates back to the 10th century.

The structure was built over an Iberian settlement and later over a Roman settlement.

The Fira Medieval Castrum Fidelis includes a medieval market and medieval games.

Historical re-enactments are also part of it; these include a knight tournament in Parc de la Muntanyeta.

The traditional Festes del Mar de Castelldefels are celebrated around Virgen María del Carmen and reflect Castelldefels' close connection with the sea.

Local cuisine and stargazing

The Mostra de Cuina de Castelldefels takes place annually and is a local gastronomy festival.

Restaurants prepare representative dishes there and offer them to the public for tasting.

Astrofels organises various public observation evenings throughout the year at the Observatorio Astronómico de Castelldefels.

These evenings normally take place on Friday evenings.
