Discover Avinyó: History, Wine and Landscapes

Avinyó has several Romanesque buildings, most of which were later altered and supplemented with elements of newer architectural styles.

Culture and History

In 1232, a church called Sant Joan was built and reconsecrated in Avinyó. Sant Joan d'Avinyó preserves parts of the Romanesque walls of the nave; the three apses were reconstructed in the 20th century. La Torre de l'Abadal has a round, battlement-crowned tower as well as decorative mosaics and stained-glass windows.

The Torre dels Soldats was part of Catalonia's optical telegraph network. This network was established by the liberal army during the Second Carlist War, also known as the Guerra dels Matiners. The Pont Vell crosses the Riera de Relat. Cal Verdaguer is a masia protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL).

At the Fira dels Matiners, historical re-enactments are staged in the streets of Avinyó. They explain the reasons for the Matiners uprising and the events that took place in Avinyó at the time. A visit to the Torre dels Soldats included access to its openings and embrasures, as well as to the former locations of the telescopes. The visit also included a viewpoint at the level of the roof terrace, offering views of the surrounding landscape. The combination of the tower, telegraph network and historical re-enactments makes different traces of the town's history visible.

Wine and Landscapes

Celler Abadal in Santa Maria d’Horta d’Avinyó offers wine tourism experiences. They focus on wine, landscapes and gastronomy. The Celler Abadal vineyards stretch across small plots and terraces surrounded by Mediterranean woodland. Celler Abadal offers the “Visita Vi&Formatge” experience, combining Abadal wines with cheese.

Interactive Experiences

El Juego del Geoparque offers interactive routes in Avinyó that can be followed using a mobile device. At El Juego del Geoparque, participants solve puzzles and identify rocks, cultural heritage and landscapes.

Routes and Nature

The Avinyó–Sant Miquel de Terradelles–Avinyó route begins in the town of Avinyó and leads to the parish church of Sant Miquel de Terradelles. The parish church is located in the municipality of Santa Maria de Merlès in the Berguedà comarca. The Avinyó–Sant Miquel de Terradelles–Avinyó route leads to Font de la Rovirassa. The Camí Ramader Central livestock trail passes through Avinyó.

In 2013, the Camí Ramader Central between Pont Vell and Alpens was marked with signposts. These signposts made it possible to follow the route. During guided excursions into the natural areas of the GEOPARC de la Catalunya Central, participants learn to observe and identify mountain birds. Field guides, drawings, binoculars and telescopes are used for this identification. In this way, historic routes, landscapes and nature observation come together along the paths through Avinyó.
