Discover El Masnou: Beaches and Maritime Culture
The Museu Municipal de Nàutica preserves significant archaeological finds from the Neolithic period and especially from Roman times. The artefacts were found during excavations of a local Roman villa.
Beaches
Platja del Masnou lies east of the marina, on the side closer to Barcelona. Platja d'Ocata is located west of the marina, on the side closer to Mataró.
Both beaches in El Masnou have sanitary facilities and service areas. They are easy to reach from the town centre and are connected by bus and train to the Rodalies-Renfe stations “El Masnou” and “Ocata”.
Culture
The Church of Sant Pere dates from the 18th century and has a Neoclassical façade. Casa Benèfica is a Modernist building in El Masnou.
Cal Teixidor is an old farmhouse dating from the 17th century. Can Targa is a 16th-century farmhouse in the former seafaring district of Alella.
Cementiri del Masnou forms an artistically significant ensemble promoted by a bourgeoisie that had grown wealthy and commissioned renowned artists of its time to create it. The cemetery reflects the golden age of the Catalan bourgeoisie.
The Mina d'Aigua Interpretation Centre reconstructs the courtyard and washhouse of a wealthy local house using original parts. El Casino is currently a private cultural and recreational facility.
Walks
The “El Masnou, terra de mar” heritage walk leads to Modernist buildings and to a particularly striking Indian house in El Masnou. The route includes 30 buildings marked with descriptive panels in Catalan, Spanish, and English.
“El Masnou, terra de mar” is signposted and can be completed independently using a free app. The individually customisable “Gent de mar i de terra” heritage walk allows the teacher to choose from twelve buildings.
The two walks connect marked buildings with different forms of independent or guided exploration on site. For “El Masnou, terra de mar”, the multilingual descriptive panels and the free app are part of the signposted route.

Masnovines originate from El Masnou and have been produced there since the 1960s. Galetes de barco served as provisions for crews travelling to America and have been documented in El Masnou since the 19th century.
