Viladecaballs: Churches, Hiking Trails and Holiday Apartments

The GR-6 long-distance hiking trail runs through the southern part of the municipality of Viladecavalls, connecting Barcelona with Montserrat. In the north, the GR-96, also known as the Camí Romeu de Montserrat, crosses the municipality.

Hiking and Landscapes

Viladecavalls offers a municipal portal for hiking and mountain biking routes, which also includes a hiking map. The hike to Turó de les Bassotes is 0.53 kilometres each way, takes around 30 minutes each way, involves an elevation gain of 120 metres and can be reached by vehicle and on foot.

The hike to Turó de les Bassotes includes a visit to the old Forn Riscal lime kiln; a path leads from the car park to this destination. Forn Riscal is a large traditional lime kiln beside a path in a wooded area. La Pedra Degollada is a natural formation of quartz conglomerate consisting of two large blocks lying one on top of the other.

Historic Sites

Sant Miquel de Toudell is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse, decorated on the outside with Lombard blind arcades. The church is located on the grounds of the Can Mir farmhouse, in a place where a necropolis and the remains of a Roman settlement were found.

A small path from the road between Terrassa and Viladecavalls leads to the remains of Castell de Toudell. The castle stands on the same plateau as the Romanesque hermitage of Sant Miquel de Toudell, on a rocky promontory at an altitude of around 220 metres, overlooking the valley of the Riera de Gaià, the Torrent del Salt and Turó de Can Mitjans.

Santa Maria de Toudell is attached to the Can Trias farmhouse and, despite its proximity to the municipality of Terrassa, lies on the north-eastern edge of the municipality of Viladecavalls. Its structure has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave layout and a semicircular apse.

Sant Martí de Sorbet was consecrated at the end of the 11th century by Bishop Folc of Barcelona. The Capella del Santíssim was added to Sant Martí de Sorbet during the pre-Modernist period and is particularly known for its stained-glass windows.

The surviving outbuildings of the Can Turu farmhouse now house the municipal library; a square was created on the former site of the main building.

Festivals and Leisure

Viladecavalls’s Festa Major takes place every year on the second weekend of July and lasts four days. In June and July, the Viu la Veu concert series is held on the terrace of the Pau Casals Music School: music is performed there in the open air at sunset, with views of Montserrat.

As part of the Festa de Sant Martí, Viladecavalls hosts a food fair featuring products from the region. It focuses on farming traditions and popular culture. The Granja Aventura Park in Viladecavalls is an educational leisure park for children and adults.
