Discover Sant Pere de Vilamajor

The preserved remains of Castell de Vilamajor include parts of the walls and towers; from the 11th century onwards, the complex was built by the Counts of Barcelona.

Culture and history

The present-day Església de Sant Pere de Vilamajor was built between 1581 and 1610 in the late Gothic style with Renaissance elements. The Esglesiola de Santa Susanna was granted parish status in the Middle Ages. Its present building was erected in 1683, reusing elements from an earlier building located farther north.

The bell tower of Sant Pere de Vilamajor is a freestanding square tower associated with the remains of the former comital palace from the 11th and 12th centuries. Torre Roja was classified as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional in 1949.

The Pont Vell de Vilamajor was built in the 17th century and changed the way the Riera de Vilamajor was crossed. The Molí de Baix, also known as Molí de Can Derrocada or Molí del Samon, was more than just a building on the Riera de Vilamajor for centuries: it was a place where the work of farmers was transformed into life.

Nature and trails

The Ermita de Sant Elies is located on the Turó de Sant Elies at an altitude of 1,000 metres within the Parc Natural del Montseny. A signposted forest track of approximately 9 kilometres from Sant Pere de Vilamajor leads to the Ermita de Sant Elies. The ancillary building of the Ermita de Sant Elies is now a mountain refuge.

The SL-C 126 Sender de la Plana de Vilamajor is an easy circular route through the lower and less mountainous part of the municipality of Sant Pere de Vilamajor. The Font Fresca del Samon is located on the shady slopes of the Turó del Samont, on the way to Mas del Samon and Santa Susanna de Vilamajor.

The Roure Gros is a centuries-old tree in the flat part of Vilamajor. It stands on a ridge surrounded by fields and forests, with views of Montseny as well as the Samon and Palestrins mountain ranges. A small wetland forms at the Font de Borrell, which is of great importance to local amphibians such as newts and salamanders.

Art

The Centre d’Art La Rectoria is housed in a former farmhouse dating from 1639 in Sant Pere de Vilamajor. Its exhibition rooms display works by local and international artists. La Mongia provides information about hiking, cycling and horse-riding routes in the municipality of Sant Pere de Vilamajor.

Traditions and events

Since 1923, the tradition of the Aplec de Sant Elies has continued every year on 25 April. Following the Mass, the Aplec de Sant Elies includes the blessing of the Panets de Sant Elies.

The Aplec de Sant Elies includes walking up the hill, a Mass, a shared meal and time spent on the esplanade overlooking the Montseny Biosphere Reserve. The medieval Vilamagore evenings take place every year in November.
