Caldes De Montbui: Thermal Springs and Culture

The thermal springs of Caldes de Montbui emerge at a temperature of more than 74°C. When thermal activity resumed in the 19th century, Caldes de Montbui developed into Spain’s second most important spa town.

Thermal Water and the Old Town

Banys Termals El Safareig was created in March 2015 by converting an existing thermal washhouse into Caldes de Montbui’s first public baths. The baths have a balcony overlooking the vegetable gardens and the natural surroundings along the Riera promenade.

Banys Termals El Safareig is part of a walking tour of three sites that showcases two different public uses of the thermal water of Caldes de Montbui. Safareig de la Portalera on Carrer de la Muralla is included in the catalogue of the architectural heritage of the old town of Caldes de Montbui and offers views of the Riera’s vegetable gardens.

The Thermalia Museum and the tourist information office organise guided tours of Caldes de Montbui’s tourist attractions.

Culture and Local Cuisine

The Thermalia Museum permanently displays the Mas Manolo collection, featuring the most important public presentation of the sculptor and painter Manolo Hugué, as well as a remarkable selection of ceramics, lithographs, and drawings by his friend Pablo Picasso. Can Delger preserves objects and furniture from a manor house belonging to the rural bourgeoisie.

Mercat de l'Olla is an iconic fair in Caldes de Montbui, which has already been held for a thirteenth edition. The fair showcases thermal cuisine and promotes high-quality regional products.

At Mercat de l'Olla, Caldes de Montbui’s traditional thermal broth is prepared in a cauldron with a capacity of 1,600 litres; more than 6,000 portions are cooked and distributed over the weekend. Carquinyolis are considered regional products.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

Caldes de Montbui has eight different hiking routes: easy routes such as the Route del Remei or the path to the Iberian settlement of Torre Roja take no more than an hour; the five-hour Route dels Ermitans is more demanding.

A folding map published by Caldes de Montbui lists the path to Torre Roja among the hiking and nature trails.

The Can Rius meeting point includes ten mountain biking routes, ranging from 28 kilometres in the surroundings of Caldes de Montbui to 64 kilometres on the Caldes–Castellterçol–Sant Julià d'Uxols route. Can Rius also includes eight family-friendly routes through the surroundings of Caldes de Montbui.

Bus Services and Festival

Regular, express, and night buses for intercity travel operate from the Caldes de Montbui bus station.

The Festa del Foc i l'Aigua, during which the Escaldàrium takes place, is celebrated in Caldes de Montbui on the second Saturday of every July.
