Bagá between the Middle Ages and the mountains

Culture

The Palau dels Pinós was the residence of the Barons of Pinós from the founding of the town of Bagà in 1233. The Centre Medieval i dels Càtars in the former Palau de Pinós features a permanent exhibition on Catharism and the Middle Ages in Bagà. The Església de Sant Esteve de Bagà is a beautiful example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture and was completed in 1339. Its sculpted Gothic portal is considered the most important example of Gothic architecture in the comarca. The Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Paller was built in 1747 and has a Baroque high altarpiece. Plaça Galceran de Pinós is an arcaded square in Bagà’s medieval old town, with buildings of remarkable age. At the Pont romànic del riu Bastareny, preserved mills on the river bear witness to Bagà’s long-standing economic activity along the river.

Mountains

The Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró is a mountain park ranging from 800 m in the valley bottoms to 2,648 m at Puig de la Canal Baridana. It consists mainly of limestone and includes the Cadí and Moixeró mountain ranges, as well as the Pedraforca, Tossa and Puigllançada massifs. The information and interpretation centre of the Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró in Bagà provides visitor information, a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions and audiovisual material. Coll de Pal can be reached from Bagà via Avinguda Reina Elisenda and the signposted road to Coll de Pal; the pass is 19 km from Bagà.

Routes

The Els Empedrats route crosses the dels Empedrats river several times and passes the “Bullidor de la llet” waterfall at the foot of the Torrent del Forat. Access to it leads, after crossing the bridge over the dels Empedrats river, along the PR-125, marked in white and yellow, which branches off to the left. The Ruta dels Contrabandistes follows an old smuggling route that led from Cerdanya to Berguedà. It can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or by car; however, reaching Paller de Dalt by vehicle requires using a forest track. The GR 107, also known as the Camí dels Bons Homes, crosses the Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró lengthwise and passes through Gósol, Bagà and Bellver de Cerdanya.

Festivals

Fia-Faia is one of the fire festivals held around the winter solstice in the Pyrenees and was recognized by UNESCO on 1 December 2015. On 24 December, the Fia-Faia fire was lit at Siti in Bagà at 18:00; at 18:30, the torches descended and the burning began.
