Holiday apartment in Cala de Sant Vicent: Coast and Cultural History

If you want to get to know Cala de Sant Vicent through its history, one trail leads to Cova des Culleram. The cave was dedicated to the Carthaginian goddess Tanit and was used as a Punic place of worship between the 5th and 2nd centuries BC. As a limestone cave, it has two large chambers divided into smaller rooms by curtains of stalactites. In 1994, Cova des Culleram was classified as an asset of cultural interest. It is open to the public in summer and as part of scheduled visits.

Culture and history

The Cueva visitable Cuieram cave also reaches far back into the past. It was already inhabited in the Bronze Age and was later converted into a sanctuary by the Punic civilization. Several hundred intact terracotta figures and 1,000 fragments of additional pieces were found there.

Another historic building is the church of Sant Vicent de sa Cala. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century to serve the faithful in the northeast of the island of Ibiza. The church has a single-nave layout with a barrel vault and six chapels. The historic ensemble of Sant Vicent de sa Cala also includes a circle with a radius of 250 metres, extending from the centre of the church. Several traditional farmhouses have been preserved within this historic ensemble.

The church festival of Sant Vicent de sa Cala takes place on 5 April in honour of Saint Vincent Ferrer. Thus, alongside the historic buildings, Cala de Sant Vicent also offers a religious date firmly established in the annual calendar and the surviving traces of earlier cultures.

Coast and nature

Playa Cala Sant Vicent is 320 metres long and 40 metres wide. The beach has clean, calm waters. Nearby is Port de ses Caletes, a natural cove characterised by boulders and surrounded by mountains and cliffs. Port de ses Caletes is 60 metres long and 15 metres wide and has crystal-clear water.

Cala Sant Vicent is easily accessible from Sant Joan and from the nearby village of the same name. Access to the nearby cove of Port de ses Caletes leads from Sant Joan along the PM-811 road towards Sant Vicent; a winding paved road then continues to the beach.

A hiking route leads from Sant Joan along the PM-811 road towards Cala de Sant Vicent. The hiking route covers approximately 14 kilometres and has a medium to high level of difficulty.
