Sant Rafel: Craftsmanship, Festive Culture and Cycling Tour in Ibiza
Sant Rafel is the only place in Ibiza to have been designated a “Zona de Interés artesanal”. Sant Rafel’s ceramic tradition includes pieces with Punic-inspired forms.
Culture and Craftsmanship
In 1977, Carlos Icardi set up his pottery workshop at his home, Can Ferreret, in the village of Sant Rafel. He was one of the initiators of awarding Sant Rafel the designation “Zona de Interés artesanal” as a place of craftsmanship. Carlos Icardi also gave pottery courses for several generations. Can Kinoto was supported by master craftsman Miguel Angel Ratto.
Cultural themes can be weighted differently during a trip. You can focus on one aspect or consider several perspectives side by side. Depending on your personal travel interests, you can distinguish between architecture, craftsmanship, festive culture and cycling. These themes do not form a fixed order or requirement, but can be considered separately as different focal points. Their weighting is up to you.
History and Church
The church of Sant Rafel was built shortly after the 1785 decree establishing the parishes on Ibiza. Construction lasted from 1786 to 1793. The church stands on a vantage point and offers excellent views of Eivissa and the sea.
Historical context and the spatial impression are different ways of viewing a building. The perspective that interests you more can be decided independently of other thematic focal points. Both approaches can spark interest independently of one another.
Festive Culture
The patron saint’s festival of Sant Rafel includes sporting and entertainment activities. The festival also features a ball pagès performed by the Colla de Sant Rafel. The main day of Sant Rafel’s patron saint’s festival is 24 October.
A fixed festival day and different types of events each create their own emphasis. For personal planning, the date, culture and activity can be weighted independently of one another. The individual aspects can stand side by side without one focus requiring the others.
Cycling Tour Through the Countryside
The “De mercado en mercado” route includes an approximately 9-kilometre cycling tour towards Sant Rafel. It follows quiet country roads through the Ibizan countryside.
An approximate route length and the character of the route are different planning features. You can consider the active focus of the cycling tour separately from the cultural and festival-related themes of the village. Choosing one focus does not have to exclude the other themes.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Sant Rafel, you can compare travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions with your personal interests in culture, festive culture and cycling. These accommodation details and thematic planning can be considered separately; you determine the weighting of your interests.
