Sant Josep de sa Talaia: Holiday Apartments between Coast, Nature and Culture

Sant Josep de sa Talaia combines 32 beaches with 80 kilometres of coastline. The coast also offers opportunities for water sports.

Coast and Nature

The municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia includes the Ses Salines Natural Park. The seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica along the coast of Sant Josep are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The routes through the nature park feature information about its flora, fauna and history. In this way, the paths connect the landscape with information about its natural and historical context.

One of the easier routes to Sa Talaia begins at Sant Josep de sa Talaia's town hall square. The route from the town hall square to the summit of Sa Talaia is just over 2 kilometres long and takes approximately one and a half hours. On clear days, the summit offers far-reaching panoramic views across the island.

History and Cultural Heritage

The archaeological sites include Ses Païsses de Cala d’Hort, a rural Punic-Roman settlement from the 5th century BC. The origins of the settlement at Sa Caleta date back even further, to the second half of the 8th century BC. The Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

The Centre d’Interpretació de Sa Caleta is a museum site presenting this Phoenician settlement, which is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Information panels explain how the settlement's first Phoenician inhabitants lived, which customs and rituals they followed, and which navigation and trading systems they used. The Centre d’Interpretació de Sa Caleta complex also includes anti-aircraft batteries from the 1940s connected by tunnels.

The coastal defence towers also reflect different eras. Torre des Carregador was built in the 16th century as part of the coastal defence system. It protected the salt-loading activity that was important to the economy. Torre de ses Portes is one of Sant Josep's coastal defence towers built between the 17th and 18th centuries.

Local Culture

The Església de Sant Josep stands in the town centre and was completed in 1731. It houses an organ with 2,000 pipes whose sound is inspired by the traditional Ibizan flute. The church also has the only church façade in Ibiza with a sundial. Local culture also includes a folk dance tradition known as ball pagès.

Every October, the Fira de la Sal takes place in Sant Jordi and in the Ses Salines d’Eivissa Natural Park. Gastronomy is part of its visitor programme.
