Es Cubells: Holiday Apartment, Coast and Coves

A viewpoint around the church of Es Cubells offers views over the coast as far as the island of Formentera on the horizon. Between the church, festival traditions, cliffs and coves, a townscape emerges in which history and the maritime landscape lie closely side by side.

Culture

The church of Es Cubells was provisionally made a parish church in 1933, officially elevated to a parish in 1940, and completed in 1958. Its origins date back to 1855. At that time, the exclaustrated Carmelite Francesc Palau i Quer settled in this parish and applied in Rome for permission to establish a public oratory. Despite being younger than many of Ibiza's other churches, the church preserves the island's traditional aesthetic.

A coastal defence tower, probably dating from the 17th century, stands on Puig des Savinar. Thus, both ecclesiastical history and a coastal defence structure are present in and around Es Cubells.

Festivals

The Fiestas del Carmen in Es Cubells are a deeply rooted celebration closely connected with the sea and the identity of the town. From 10 to 19 July, the festival includes cultural, musical, sporting and traditional activities. On 16 July, the programme includes a solemn mass at 8:00 p.m., a traditional procession, a communal feast offered by the Obrers, and a performance featuring ball pagès by the Grup Folklòric Sant Josep de sa Talaia.

Coast and Coves

Among the cliffs in southern Ibiza lies Cala Es Cubells, a pebble beach shaped by the erosion caused by the sea and wind. Those who reach it from the town leave the small centre of Es Cubells and descend along a winding path; the descent to the beach is on foot via a dirt trail. Above the rocky seabed, you can dive at Cala Es Cubells without having to venture far from the coast.

Ses Boques is a pebble cove with crystal-clear water, surrounded by pine-covered cliffs. The cove is suitable for sunbathing, diving and eating right on the beach. From Es Cubells, Ses Boques can be reached via the road to the left of the church.

Trails and Water

Cala Llentrisca offers crystal-clear water and a rocky seabed suitable for snorkelling. It also has traditional fishermen's huts for boats. The trail from Es Cubells to Cala Llentrisca begins at the church square, passes the Cueva de la Fuente and Ses Boques, and continues to Cala Llentrisca. Further on, the route heads westwards along a footpath of approximately 700 metres running along the edge of the cliffs.

The trail from Es Cubells to Cala Llentrisca is rated moderate to challenging, is 9 kilometres long, and takes approximately four hours there and back. On the water, the kayak route from Ses Boques to Cala Carbó enters Cala Llentrisca. Cala Llentrisca is a small fishing harbour with several boat huts; access by land is difficult.
