Gijón: Holiday apartments and houses

In Gijón, paths through the open air, coastal landscapes and museums come together. A network of eight green routes encompasses more than 50 kilometres of outdoor walking paths in total and connects the history and traditions of the region with its diverse flora and fauna. Along the river, the Senda fluvial del Piles passes through landscapes with apple orchards, forests and farmsteads.

The Jardín Botánico Atlántico is a botanical museum specialising in the flora and vegetation of the Atlantic world. The Botanical Garden can be reached on city bus routes 1 and 18.

Playa de Poniente is an artificial sandy beach in the area of Gijón/Xixón’s marina. It is suitable for trying out water sports and for children to swim. Anyone standing beneath the Elogio del Horizonte can hear the amplified sound of the sea.

Sightseeing

Guided tours of the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura include the square, the theatre, the church and the ascent to the Mirador de la Torre. The tower of the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura is 117.60 metres high above the central courtyard; its crowning spire is 17 metres high. The Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura can be reached on city bus routes 1 and 18.

The BIOPARC Acuario de Gijón presents more than 60 freshwater and saltwater aquariums. It includes the Río Cantábrico section, which presents the native and non-native aquatic fauna of an Asturian river. During school visits, visitors can interact directly with animals such as starfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers in a tidal zone.

Culture and history

The Museo de las Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés is an on-site museum above a Roman bath complex from the early imperial period, considered one of the most important archaeological sites in northern Spain. The Ciudadela de Celestino Solar, also known as Ciudadela de Capua, is a museum and cultural space that illustrates the living conditions of Gijón’s working-class population during the last third of the 19th century and in the years before and after the Civil War.

Cimadevilla is a former fishing district that has preserved its buildings, historic layout and maritime atmosphere. The Villa Romana de Veranes was a large Roman manor house from the 4th century.

The Parque Arqueológico-Natural de la Campa Torres is the largest fortified maritime site on the Asturian coast. It is located on the coast within the municipality of Gijón and covers 50,000 square metres.

The Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos is located in a palace built between the late 14th and early 16th centuries, where Jovellanos was born in 1744. The museum includes the Capilla de los Remedios, which was annexed to the building and contains Jovellanos’s mausoleum.

Collections and gardens

The Museo Nicanor Piñole preserves more than 6,000 drawings by the painter born in Gijón. By prior arrangement, it offers guided tours for groups of 20 or more.

The Muséu del Pueblu d’Asturies includes hórreos and granaries from the 18th and 19th centuries. It also displays a collection of bagpipes from North Africa, Eastern and Central Europe, France, the United Kingdom and the Iberian Peninsula.

Almost 50 contemporary art sculptures are displayed in the gardens of the Museo Evaristo Valle. The museum permanently exhibits more than 100 works by Evaristo Valle and has more than 16,000 square metres of historic gardens combining French and English garden design.

The Museo Barjola is located in the former La Trinidad complex. This includes the Capilla de La Trinidad, an outstanding example of Gijón Baroque from the 17th century. On its three upper floors, the Museo Barjola displays part of the work of Juan Barjola, covering the period from the mid-1950s to the late 1980s.
