Cimadevilla in Gijón – Roman Baths and Urban History

The Museo de las Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés is a museum near the coast, located at the archaeological site in the heart of the ancient city of Gijón.

Culture

The Museum of the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés presents a Roman bathing complex built in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD and featuring several construction phases. A walkway in the Museum of the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés recreates the original Pompeian route and offers views of the baths’ original rooms.

The Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos displays some paintings from Jovellanos’ art collection alongside his furniture and personal belongings. The Jove-Lavandera mansion in the Cimavilla district is one of Gijón’s oldest representative buildings; Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was born there and stayed there for extended periods.

The main interiors of Casa Paquet retain stained-glass windows, doors, stucco and decorative mouldings, wall coverings and floor coverings. The streets between San Lorenzo Beach and Gijón’s marina are home to Roman remains, palatial houses and former fishermen’s houses.

History

The entrance to the Cimavilla air-raid shelter is located next to the ground floor of Casa Paquet on Calle de Claudio Alvargonzález. Of the air-raid shelters whose construction was attempted between 1936 and 1937, the one in Cimavilla was the most elaborate and largest; it could accommodate 1,200 people.

A chapel was originally built in the 17th century and rebuilt in 1938.

Public Spaces

Cerro de Santa Catalina is a public park with areas for children’s recreation and relaxation. Cerro de Santa Catalina is a hill with a natural viewpoint. Eduardo Chillida’s work “Elogio del Horizonte” was inaugurated on 9 June 1990 on Cerro de Santa Catalina, at the edge of the Cimavilla peninsula.
