Nature

The Jardín Botánico Atlántico de Gijón divides its living plant collections into four thematic areas: “Entorno Cantábrico”, “Factoría Vegetal”, “Jardín de la Isla” and “Itinerario Atlántico”. The site contains 1,724 plant species, including subspecies and varieties. The four areas and the stated number of species describe two aspects of the garden: its thematic organisation and the breadth of the living plant collections brought together there. Culture

The Museo de las Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés is a museum opened in 1995 at the archaeological site near the coast in the heart of Gijón’s historic old town. Its information displays explain the significance of baths in the Roman world, as well as the function and history of Gijón’s public Roman baths. A walkway recreates the baths’ original Pompeian-style route and provides views of the original bathing rooms: apodyterium, tepidarium, frigidarium, caldarium and sudationes.

Coast

The crescent-shaped San Lorenzo Beach is a historic urban beach near the centre of Gijón. Visitors can surf, kayak and windsurf at the beach, as well as play beach volleyball and beach football. The almost three-kilometre-long, very busy El Muro promenade runs alongside San Lorenzo Beach. At San Lorenzo, these sports and the length of the promenade can be considered separately.

Cuisine

The tour at Llagar Sidra JR explains the crushing and pressing of the apples, the extraction of the juice, and fermentation in tanks and barrels. It then includes a tasting of natural cider served directly from the barrel; only adults may take part. This tour covers the entire production process, from the apple hanging on the tree to bottling.

Routes
