Exploring Nature

The Senda Accesible de Campiellos is a path approximately 680 metres long, adapted for people with reduced mobility. It ends at a viewpoint with information panels as well as texts and drawings in Braille.

Several paths open up the landscape in different ways. The Senda Verde El Torrexón leads to the Mirador de Cuyacerra, from which the Rioseco Reservoir and the medieval Torrexón can be seen. From the summit of La Xamoca, the view extends across the Nalón Valley, the reservoirs, the Foces del Llaímo, the Sierra del Crespón and Peña Mayor. The Ruta de la Sierra del Crespón runs across meadows and chestnut groves above the reservoir towards the Vallimaor mountain pasture.

The Ruta del Alba is designated a natural monument and is approximately 14 kilometres long when counted as a return trip. It begins in the village of Soto in the municipality of Sobrescobio and runs through a water-rich valley with ponds, calm stretches of water, small cascades and springs.

The Rioseco Reservoir is designated a wildlife reserve and has an observation hut at its far end for observing waterfowl. In Sobrescobio, it is also a landscape and ornithological site of great value, with footpaths, viewpoints and nature areas suitable for families.

Culture and History

The Casa del Agua in Rioseco presents water to visitors in an interactive way and provides educational and illustrative materials for experimenting and observing. The museum space is divided into the themes of water as a substance, the influence of water on the natural environment, and hydropower, water distribution and wastewater disposal. The Casa del Agua Museum is located in the vicinity of Sobrescobio; it can be reached via the AS-17 road between Avilés and Puerto de Tarna.

The Camín d'Aceu runs between Rioseco and Anzó through Sobrescobio and follows the preserved traces of an old road through the steep gorges of the Nalón. Soto preserves traditional architecture with hórreos, wooden balconies and an old washhouse. The remains of the Castillo de los Aceales, also known as the Torrexón de Villamoréi, are considered a defensive structure probably of Roman origin.

The Centro de Interpretación Armando Palacio Valdés Museum and the Museo de Madera y la Madreña Museum are also located in the vicinity of Sobrescobio. In the wider regional area are the Nido del Urogallo Museum, the Llomba summit, Cueto Mirallo mountain and Peña Ten mountain.

The Peña Mea summit is located in the vicinity of Sobrescobio. Rusecu, also known as Rioseco, is the starting point for several inland tours to Cangas de Onís.

Local Specialities and Events

Queso Casín, one of Spain's oldest cheeses, is produced in Sobrescobio among other places, one of three Asturian production councils. It is made from cow's milk, with the curd being kneaded several times.

The gastronomic events dedicated to Pitu de Caleya and trout are listed for the third weekend of October in Sobrescobio.
