Nature and coast

Playa de Barayo is part of the Reserva Natural Parcial de Barayo and features dunes, marshes, forests and cliffs. The partial nature reserve encompasses well-preserved plant communities on cliffs and in dunes, marshes, reed beds and alder forests. At least three endangered animal species live in the Reserva Natural Parcial de Barayo, including the otter, the Eurasian oystercatcher and the European shag. Sailing, surfing, windsurfing and diving are possible at Playa de Barayo.

The GR 204 Senda Costera E-9 includes a marked 19.5-kilometre stage from Barayo to Navia. Playa de Navia can be reached via a paved road or on foot along the seafront promenade and is accessible from the town via Avenida del Pardo. It has a recreational area with picnic spots, toilets, parking spaces and cafés, as well as a lifeguard service. Connected to Playa de Navia is La Poza, a lake area surrounded by dense pine and eucalyptus forest that is used by thousands of birds as a resting place.

Playa de Frejulfe is designated a natural monument and, at around 750 metres, is the longest beach in Navia. Playa de Coedo was once a whale-watching viewpoint and a whaling bay; some maritime equipment is still preserved there. The probably pre-Roman Castro de Fabal is located on a raised promontory on Playa de Fabal.

Culture and history

The “Juan Pérez Villamil” Ethnographic Museum presents the region’s maritime and rural life through a traditional farmhouse and seafarer’s house, as well as eight traditional occupations or areas of life. The museum also contains merchant navy tools, a collection of shells and marine fossils, and an extensive exhibition of ship models.

Cine Fantasio has been included in the inventory of Asturias’s cultural heritage and is under full protection. It has the spatial and acoustic conditions required for use as a cinema, theatre and auditorium. Rehearsals by choirs and the traditional music school take place at the Casino de Navia; social dances and theatre rehearsals are also held there, and it has a large function room.

Puerto de Vega was formerly an important trading and whaling port and remains connected with fishing to this day. The town combines a historic maritime village tradition with the history of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, who died there. The Muralla Medieval and the Casa de Coaña preserve a roughly 15-metre-long section of slate masonry wall and a house built in 1692.

The Palacio de Campo-Osorio in Piñera is a country palace built in the 18th century and designated a historical-artistic monument. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Barca is a neo-Gothic church with a Latin-cross layout and three naves. It has a neo-Gothic altarpiece, gilded and polychromed in 1954, as well as two works by Álvaro Delgado.

Events and activities

The Festival de la Sidra Villa de Navia was established in 2002, promotes Asturian cider culture in western Asturias and is regarded as one of the region’s significant representations of this tradition. It was included in the catalogue of festivals and activities of tourist interest of the Principality of Asturias.

The Descenso Internacional a Nado de la Ría de Navia is an event of national tourist interest that combines open-water swimming with tradition, folklore and public participation. The Costa Naviega International Crossing is an outdoor sporting hiking day featuring film screenings, a photography competition, musical performances and a dance event. It usually takes place on the second or third Sunday in June.

Getting there

Navia can be reached from the west via the N-634 and the A-8 from Galicia, and from the east via the N-632 and the A-8 from the Basque Country and Cantabria.
