Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa Marina de Puerto de Vega is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It was built between 1730 and 1749 and contains Baroque altarpieces by the sculptor José Bernardo de la Meana.

The Museo Etnográfico “Juan Pérez Villamil” recreates traditional ways of life, artisanal occupations and Puerto de Vega’s fish-canning industry. It also honors the lives of seafaring and farming families, as well as emigration.

The entrance from Puerto de Vega to the Parque Histórico del Navia, “Historias del Mar,” provides insights into fishing techniques, the processing of marine products, coastal trade, whaling and maritime traditions.

The Paseo del Baluarte features two 18th-century cannons. The Capilla de Nuestra Señora de La Atalaya was founded at the beginning of the 17th century by the guild of seafaring and trade.

The Monumento a Jovellanos was relocated and rededicated on January 15, 1983, at the entrance to Campo de la Atalaya. The Casas de americanos (conjunto de Vega) ensemble includes the Casa de Policarpo and the Casa de Ochoa, both of which were built at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Primitiva Aduana del puerto features a beautiful archway through which the medieval Camino Real ran. At the Rula de Puerto de Vega, guided tours explain fish species, fishing methods and how the fish auction works.

The Casino-Theater in Navia also dates from 1930 to 1931 and is characterized by a glazed, curved balcony in the modernist style. The Casino-Theater houses a theater that is occasionally opened for temporary exhibitions and cultural events.

Coast and Nature

Puerto de Vega preserves a picturesque fishing harbor with centuries-old battlements. Playa de Frexulfe is a natural monument between Navia and Puerto de Vega.

Playa de Frexulfe features a dune field stabilized by a pine forest, with protected or endangered natural species.

Trails

The Senda Costa Naviega (GR-204) connects Playa de Barayo with Playa de Navia and passes through Puerto de Vega. It is approximately 19 kilometers long, has extensive, well-preserved signage and is suitable for mountain bikes.

The nearby Playa de Frexulfe can be reached from the N-634 via the turnoff to Puerto de Vega and then along the NV-2 toward Navia. The Puerta de Entrada de Puerto de Vega can be reached from Navia via the NV-2 toward Andés.
