The Sauceda de Buelles is recognized as a natural monument and forms a woodland between El Mazu, Narganes, and Buelles along both banks of the Cares-Deva. It consists mainly of white willows, as well as shrub willows, alders, and oaks. Nature
The Arboretum de los Picos de Europa offers a three-kilometre circular route along the riverside promenade of the Cares-Deva, from El Tilo to the Romanesque chapel of San Juan de Ciliergo. It showcases the vascular flora of Asturias, particularly the flora of Picos de Europa National Park and its surrounding area, organized according to Atlantic and Mediterranean or sub-Mediterranean ecosystems.
The Panes–Cimiano–Endilaila–Panes circular route offers views of Panes, the Deva-Cares, the Sierra del Cuera, and large parts of the Peñamellera Baja valley. Near Endilaila, it passes through a meadow and mountain landscape where deer and numerous birds can be seen at dawn and dusk.
The Alevia–Picu el Paisanu PR AS 191 hiking trail leads to Picu El Paisanu in the Sierra del Cuera, the highest point in Peñamellera Baja within this mountain range. It also passes the former facilities of the El Pilar iron and manganese mine. The stage of the Camino Natural de la Cordillera Cantábrica connects Panes and Alles via Peñamellera Baja and Peñamellera Alta.
Various mountain hiking routes lead from San Esteban and Cuñaba through Picos de Europa National Park. Along the Cares-Deva in Peñamellera Baja, there are particularly beautiful fishing spots such as El Tilo, Monejo, and El Coyú.
Culture
The Palacio de San Román in Panes is designated an Asset of Cultural Interest, dates mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, and is classified as Baroque. The Palacio de San Román is arranged around an inner courtyard; the main palace is flanked by two former buildings used as a stable and hayloft. At the Palacio del Collado in Cimiano, an elaborately decorated palace contrasts with a stark-looking stone chapel whose gable and bell gable are adorned with balls.
The Puente Viejo de Robriguero is one of the oldest structures in Peñamellera Baja. It is a stone single-arch bridge with a span of 12.5 metres and a width of 3.10 metres; its origins may date back to the late Middle Ages.
The Alevia–Abándames–Alevia circular route leads to Abándames, the former capital of the Peñamellera valley, where several stately homes and palaces have been preserved. Abándames has the largest number of palaces and heraldic houses in the Peñamellera valley. Narganes was formerly a place of basket makers known as “donjuanes”.
The Cueva de La Loja was the first cave with Paleolithic art discovered in Asturias. The Cueva de La Loja and its Educational Classroom are located in El Mazu in Peñamellera Baja, on the banks of the Cares-Deva River. The cave contains an archaeological deposit from the Magdalenian, as well as animal depictions engraved into the walls, including several bovines and a horse.
The Museo de los Bolos de Asturias presents the process of making skittles and balls, as well as preparing the playing surface. The upper floor introduces fourteen types of bowling practiced in Asturias. The museum is located at Barrio La Bolera 1 in Panes.
