Alevia: Views, Mountain Trails and Historic Sites

Landscape

The Mirador de San Antonio offers panoramic views of the Peñamellera valley. From the summit of Pico el Paisano, the view extends across the Peñamellera valleys and the Picos de Europa; in clear weather, the Cantabrian Sea is visible on the horizon.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Alevia is classified as belonging to the Gothic-Baroque style. It preserves Gothic structural remains from the late 14th or early 15th century: a pointed triumphal arch, decorated capitals and a ribbed vault in the presbytery.

The Torre del Reloj in Alevia was built in 1951 and has a bell tower and a clock. The Quinta de Arriba is a manor house in the Indianos architectural style.

Alevia’s Indianos architectural character is associated with the history of emigration to the Americas. The Capilla de San Antonio was rebuilt; according to some researchers, a Romanesque chapel may previously have stood on the site.

The Mina del Pilar mined a ferromanganese ore vein; reports of its exploitation date back to the 16th century.

Festivals

San Juan is a local festival in Alevia held on 24 June. The celebrations of Nuestra Señora del Rosario included a danza prima, a vermouth round, dancing, traditional games, a communal meal and the auction of a bread-and-flower offering.

Hiking Trails

The Alevia–Pico el Paisano route is a difficult, 12.2-kilometre circular mountain hike that starts and ends in Alevia. Along the way, it passes the remains of the Mina del Pilar, an iron and manganese mine dating from the 19th century.

Another route, Alevia–Abándames–Alevia, starts in the village of Alevia and is classified as a hiking route. The different trail characteristics can help you organize day plans according to your preferred length and format.

For planning your day, there are therefore two differently described hiking options side by side: the 12.2-kilometre circular route is explicitly classified as difficult, while the route via Abándames is designated as a hiking route. This allows you to weigh the natural and cultural aspects separately in your own selection, without treating both routes as equivalent.

Road Trip

Alevia is included in Turismo Asturias’s road trip route “El infinito encanto de Picos de Europa”. On its way through the Cares Gorge and onward to Panes, the route takes in panoramic locations such as Alevia.
