Panes: Holiday Apartment Amid Rock Art and River Trails

Culture and History

The Palacio de San Román in Panes is considered the most interesting, complete and best-preserved group of buildings belonging to the Mier family’s houses in the eastern municipalities of Asturias. It is a rural palace dating from towards the end of the 17th century, with a Neoclassical façade, a freestanding chapel and various ancillary buildings used for agriculture. The Plaza Nueva in Panes was laid out in 1934–1935 and includes the public schools, a bolera and the Museo de los Bolos de Asturias. The historicist parish church of San Vicente in Panes replaced a Romanesque predecessor that was destroyed in 1936.

The Museo de los Bolos de Asturias is Spain’s first museum dedicated to this traditional sport. On the upper floor, the 14 types of skittles played in Asturias are presented in two groups, “derribo” and “aventado”. On the ground floor, exhibits show how skittles and balls are made as well as how the playing field is prepared; a collection of relevant tools is also displayed alongside texts and photographs.

La Brañona is a wooded recreational area on the banks of the Deva-Cares River in Panes, Peñamellera Baja. From the centre of Panes, a 1.5 km paved road leads to the football pitch next to the La Brañona recreational area. The Paseo de las Escolleras in Panes is a riverside path.
