Abándames – History, Routes and Holiday Apartments in Asturias

Until 1889, Abándames was the capital of the Royal Valley of Peñamellera. Its history is encountered not only in dates, but also in church architecture, palace architecture, old routes and the festival weekends associated with the village.

Culture

A walk through the village leads to the bridge and fountain of L'Acebal. On one side of the San Salvador church there is a striking tiled fountain; the church has Romanesque origins. El Palenque is a Renaissance building from the beginning of the 18th century.

The Palacio de La Cajiga is a former manor palace from the 17th century in Abándames. It is listed as part of Asturias's historical and cultural heritage and preserves historic architectural elements inside: ashlar arches, stone window seats, beams and centuries-old corbels. Abándames has the largest number of palaces and coat-of-arms houses in the valley. The fortified settlement of Abándames is listed in the Asturian heritage inventory under code IPCA-YA-47-001.

Routes and History

A route passing through Abándames formed part of the Camino de Santiago. The historic route near Socueto was formerly known as the Camino Real. The remains of an old bridge over the Río de los Molinos are associated with the Middle Ages. The El Acebal bridge is considered to be of Roman origin.

Nature and Hiking

The Río de los Molinos once supplied water to 12 mills. Abándames offers a viewpoint over the Cares Valley. The Abándames–Cavandi–Cerébanes–Abándames hiking route is a circular route of approximately 7 to 8 kilometres and takes about two and a half hours. It is undertaken independently and not as a guided activity. The route leads to the fountain of L'Acebal, which is attributed a possible Roman origin.

The village walk and the circular route are presented as different forms of activity; their length, timeframe and method of undertaking them can be considered separately when planning personally.

Abándames thus brings together several clearly distinguishable ways of exploring the area: the village walk focuses on individual buildings and water features, the history of the routes follows the Camino de Santiago and the Camino Real, and the circular route adds a landscape focus with its river, viewpoint and historic bridges. The three festival references complement these places with dates in June, July and August.
