Culture and History
The Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is a Baroque church with a Latin-cross floor plan, an ornate stone portal and a square bell tower. Its Baroque organ is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), has been restored and is still played on special occasions. The church was commissioned in 1715 as part of a significant Baroque ensemble.
The Iglesia Prerrománica de Santianes, also known as the Iglesia de San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista, is considered the oldest surviving example of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture. It was built on the initiative of King Silo after the court was moved from Cangas de Onís to Pravia and was designed as a palace church with the function of a royal pantheon.
Nature and Landscape
The landscape around Pravia is characterised by gentle mountains and broad valleys and is crossed by the Nalón and Narcea rivers; their waters are associated with salmon, while the fertile river meadows are used to grow fabas.
Monte Gamonedo is a mountain in the vicinity of Pravia. The area around Pravia also contains several historic and scenic sites: Chalet de Solís is a palace, La Casa de la Torre o Casa Amarilla is a palace, Palacio de Valdecarzana y Vallehermoso is a palace and Castillo Medieval Soto del Barco is a castle. Playa de Aguilar and Playa de los Quebrantos are beaches in the vicinity of Pravia; Monte Agudo is another mountain there.
El Rincón de las Aves in Santianes is a zoological centre open to visitors, with more than 135 bird species and a garden with over 400 plant species.
Routes and Local Traditions
The Ruta de los Marineros follows the paths taken by female fish sellers who travelled inland from Cudillero to sell their goods. The Ruta en coche de los Miradores returns to Pravia via Los Cabos.
A weekly market takes place in Pravia on Thursdays. The rivers of Pravia are associated with salmon, and fabas are grown in the fertile river meadows.
The Molinos de La Veiga have been in operation since 1890 and continue to mill in the traditional way using hydropower. Visiting the Molinos de La Veiga requires prior telephone contact and an appointment.
