The historic centre of Grado is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its architectural heritage includes the Palacio Miranda-Valdecarzana: the building has a rectangular floor plan arranged around a central courtyard, with four towers at the corners. Originally built in the 15th century, it was completely remodelled in the Baroque style in the 17th and 18th centuries.
From Oviedo, Grado can be reached via the A-63 motorway or the N-634. Renting a holiday apartment in Grado combines accommodation planning with the choice of destination.
Culture and History
The Puente de Peñaflor also bears several layers of history. It was built in the 12th century and rebuilt several times because of flooding. It was also the scene of significant battles during the Peninsular War and the Spanish Civil War.
The Museo Etnográfico y de Historia de Grau/Grado was founded in 1982 and distributes its collections across three locations. San Martín de Gurullés is a former abbey founded by women in the 12th century and is considered the best-preserved Romanesque church in central-western Asturias.
Routes
The Camino Primitivo de Santiago runs from east to west through Grado. The section of the Camino de Santiago Primitivo in Grado runs for approximately 8.5 kilometres without detours from Peñaflor to El Freisnu. The Camín Real de la Mesa runs from north to south through Grado. It includes cycling routes with cultural connections that pass through Grau/Grado, including the Camino Primitivo de Santiago.
Landscape and Nature
The floodplains of Grado, fed by the Cubia and Nalón rivers, provide fertile land for high-quality horticulture. The rural landscape of Grado includes farms, livestock farming, meadows, forests and numerous interesting routes.
The Ruta del río Cubia follows the basin of the Cubia, a tributary of the Nalón. The Senda Fluvial del Río Cubía is a short, easy path along the Cubia, also a tributary of the Nalón, connecting the town with a natural setting. A recreational area is located near the Senda Fluvial del Río Cubía. Halfway along the Senda Fluvial del Río Cubía, the Jardín de las Mariposas y Polinizadores can be seen.
