The Sierra del Aramo is an almost 20-kilometre-long and seven-kilometre-wide limestone range. The high plateau of the Sierra del Aramo is characterised by karst formations and sinkholes.

Landscape

The area of the Sierra del Aramo encompasses the mountain range between Quirós to the west and Riosa and Morcín to the east. In the north of the Sierra del Aramo, a paved track leads from the Viapará recreational area via the Alto del Angliru towards Gamonal.

Activities

The Alberto Suárez Laso riverside path is six kilometres long in total, essentially flat, and includes gentle ascents and descents. For the most part, it runs along the banks of the Riosa, Code and Llamo rivers between the Lleron recreational area and Felguera.

The “Bienvenidos al Angliru” route is a 74-kilometre circular route for road bikes. On the ascent to the Angliru, it follows a mountain road. The L'Angliru mountain pass in Riosa is known for the 23.5 percent gradient of the Cueña les Cabres.

The Ruta del Agua leads from the Aramo Tunnel to the village of Llamo/Ḷḷamo.

Culture and History

The Capilla de la Virgen de las Nieves in Llamo dates from the 17th century and contains murals with floral motifs, birds and Stations of the Cross scenes. The Capilla de San José in Valle de la Xuncar was built in 1713 and houses an altarpiece depicting the Virgin Mary, Saint Anthony and Saint Joseph with the infant Jesus.

The Casa de Félix in Valle de la Xuncar is a 17th-century building and is considered one of the oldest in the municipality of Riosa. The Capilla del Espíritu Santo was built at the beginning of the 18th century and is well preserved. The Casa de los Muñiz was built in the 17th century and remodelled several times.

The prehistoric Minas de Texeo are considered one of the oldest mining complexes in Europe. The mining village of Rioseco preserves visible remains of copper mines in Riosa.

Riosa is one of the places mentioned in the Asturian approach to the cultural route Ruta Vía de la Plata.

Paths and Orientation

The Mirador de Texeo offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Directly next to the Mirador de Texeo there is a recreational area with benches and tables.

It is possible to park at the entrance to Llamo/Ḷḷamo; the first signposts for the Texeo route are located next to the spring. The Texeo route is not signposted and requires physical fitness, a good sense of direction and particular caution near the archaeological site.

The route over Pico La Xistra is not signposted, has no water sources and requires mountain experience.

Anyone planning their stay in Riosa can rent a holiday apartment.
