Culture and History
The Torre Medieval de Salas, also known as the Torre de los Valdés, is a square tower from the 14th century connected by an arch to the Palacio de Valdés-Salas. The Palacio de Valdés-Salas is a complex dating from the 14th to the 16th century, comprising a palace and a medieval tower connected by an arch bearing coats of arms.
The Palacio de Valdés-Salas houses the Fundación Valdés-Salas and the Aula Universitaria Valdés-Salas, which organises cultural and academic activities. The Museo Prerrománico San Martín de Salas preserves valuable artefacts and epigraphic stone slabs from the nearby Church of San Martín.
The Monastery of San Salvador de Cornellana has been a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1994 and was added to the World Heritage List in 2015 as an element associated with the Primitive Way of Saint James.
In Malleza and Mallecina, there is a very well-preserved group of houses in the Indianos architectural style.
Nature
Pico Aguión is a natural viewpoint offering panoramic views over the valleys of the Narcea and Nonaya, the town of Salas and the mountains of western Asturias. The chapel of Nuestra Señora del Viso lies 5 km from the town of Salas, near the summit of Monte Viso at an altitude of around 600 m, and offers views of diverse landscapes.
The Senda de la Cascada de Nonaya follows the Nonaya River through a natural corridor inhabited by trout and eels. The Tejo de Salas is a natural monument and one of the tallest yew trees in Asturias; it is 16 metres high and stands beside the parish church of San Martín.
Walking Routes
Signposted routes from the town of Salas lead to Pico Aguión. Before reaching the waterfall, the Senda de la Cascada de Nonaya crosses historic stone bridges.
The approved short-distance hiking trail P.R. AS-128, “Sendero del Salmón”, runs along the Narcea River following the route of a former railway line. The “Salas desde la Trinchera” route leads to former Spanish Civil War positions in the hills around Salas.
Along the Primitive Way through Salas, churches, chapels, wayside crosses and pilgrims’ hospitals line the route.
The Albergue de peregrinos de Salas has 16 places, is located 200 metres from the Camino and welcomes pilgrims year-round.
The Camino de Santiago passing through Salas is considered the first pilgrimage route and the oldest route to Compostela.
Local Highlights
Carajitos del Profesor is an iconic shop in Salas selling carajitos, a typical sweet from Salas that is made there by hand every day according to a centuries-old recipe.
The Concurso de Sidra Casera de Salas is an annual event that brings together local producers.
