Discover Malleza – Indian Architecture and Holiday Apartment

Malleza is known for its numerous Indian-style buildings, and the town’s Indian houses are closely linked to emigration to Cuba. Some people refer to Malleza as “Little Havana”. Palm trees are regarded as a symbol of Indian houses and as a hallmark of successful returnees from emigration, who surrounded themselves with exotic gardens.

Culture

Casa de Las Palmeras is located on Malleza’s Indian architecture route and combines late Art Nouveau with the vernacular details of typical Asturian manor houses. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is an 18th-century church considered an Indian architectural gem, standing out for its distinctive green bell tower.

The architectural character also includes a considerable number of traditional hórreos and paneras. The Palacio de los Condes de Toreno was the ancestral home of the Malleza family; it was built in the second half of the 16th century.

Getting Around

The local SL AS-23 walking route, “Paseo por Malleza”, starts and ends in Malleza. Its route runs from Malleza via La Granja and back to Malleza. The route begins at Plaza del Conde de Casares, which can be identified by the church and its distinctive green dome. The approximate duration of the walk is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The first suggested section of the route offers the opportunity to see several examples of Indian architecture, including Las Palmeras. In La Granja, visitors can see the Palacio del Conde de Toreno. Villa Alicia, a beautiful Indian house, lies below the Palacio del Conde de Toreno. Los Rubieros is also home to an ethnographic collection that can be visited.

The second suggested route section passes through an extensive green area with chestnut, oak, hazel and birch trees. When planning independently, the sections mentioned can be distinguished according to their cultural and landscape focus.

The suggested sections of the Paseo por Malleza each have a different focus. The first connects several sites of architectural and ethnographic heritage, while the second leads through an extensive green area and therefore through a different type of landscape. For day planning, cultural sightseeing and the landscape route thus stand alongside one another as clearly distinct themes.

Malleza is connected to Salas by the local road SL-12 and the regional road AS-225.
