The Lagos de Covadonga comprise the lakes Enol and La Ercina in the western massif of the Picos de Europa. The Buferrera information point is located at the Lagos de Covadonga in the municipality of Cangas de Onís. The Buferrera recreation area is situated near the Lagos de Covadonga and has tables, toilets, a fountain, and an arboretum.

During the regulated access hours, access to the Lagos de Covadonga by private vehicles is prohibited, except for expressly authorized vehicles. The Pedro Pidal Visitor Center presents the history and natural values of the national park. The Sanctuary of Covadonga is located in an exceptionally beautiful natural setting.

Paths and Routes

The Camín de la Reina is an easy hiking trail connecting Sotu and Cangas de Onís through meadows, villages, and small chapels, following the route taken by Isabel II during her visit to Covadonga in 1858. Part of the trail runs through the Natura 2000 ZEC Río Sella protected area.

The mountain biking route to the Mirador de Següencu starts and ends in Cangas de Onís and offers views of the Picos de Europa, the Cantabrian Mountains, and a small stretch of coastline. The Cangas de Onís Trail Running Center “Senderos de la Reconquista” comprises three routes of increasing difficulty.

Culture

The Capilla de Santa Cruz is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest and was built in 737 by King Favila over a dolmen. The chamber of the Dolmen de Santa Cruz is decorated with geometric engravings and drawings; the dolmen is dated to approximately the 3rd millennium BC. It is open to the public year-round, but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; during Holy Week and in summer, several guided visits are offered daily, with a limited number of participants.

The bridge over the Sella now has six arches.

Traditions

Gamonéu del Valle is produced year-round in the lower-lying areas of Onís and Cangas de Onís. The Fiesta del Pastor takes place in Vega de Enol and includes rural games, regional dances, the sale of handicrafts, and a shepherds’ council. The festival in honor of Saint Anthony takes place on June 13 and is considered the most important traditional festival in Cangas de Onís.
