Perlleces: Trails, Chapels and Picos de Europa

Perlleces combines small rural paths with a road route through the village, offering views of the Picos de Europa and the Güeña valley. In the area, visitors can discover landscapes around the hamlets of Tresano, Carrocéu, La Metía and Cebia. Perlleces can be viewed on several scales: landscape, rural architecture, memory and movement exist side by side.

Trails and Landscape

The official Pico el Arbolín route leads as far as Cardes. There, signs point to the Cueva del Buxu; a visit should be arranged in advance with the Cangas de Onís tourist office.

From Cardes, the road leads via Onao to Perlleces. The route can then be continued as a round trip through the surrounding villages. From Cardes, the Cueva del Buxu can be reached on foot via a path that takes a little over 20 minutes.

The named Perlleces–Tresanu–Carroceu (ASTURIAS) hiking route is an 8.76-kilometre circular trail rated easy.

For planning the day's rhythm, these formats can be considered separately. A walking time in minutes and a distance in kilometres are not interchangeable; a round trip through villages follows a different pattern from a circular trail. You can begin by sorting according to time, route format or the change between road and footpath. The choice between these descriptions does not have to be made through a single activity: one day can be conceived as a road trip, another as a walk or circular hike.

Culture and History

In local historical accounts, the rural chapel in Perlleces appears under the name Capilla de San José; its official tourist designation is Capilla de San Antonio. It has a rectangular nave, a rectangular presbytery area and a portico at the entrance.

The entrance portal of the Capilla de San José has a round arch with radially arranged voussoirs. The Capilla de San José is listed in the Architectural Inventory of Asturias (IPAA) and in the Cangas de Onís urban planning catalogue.

According to historical tradition, King Pelayo and Gaudiosa were buried in Abamia. The traditional festival in honour of San José was celebrated annually in Perlleces on 8 August.

The cultural details can be read on different scales: the name places the chapel in context, the floor plan describes its construction, the portal draws attention to the entrance, and the historical references extend the framework beyond the individual building.
