Playa de Salinas is valued by surfers throughout Asturias for its high-quality waves.

The dune system of Playa del Espartal is designated a natural monument. Playa del Espartal is suitable for swimming and surfing and is located near Castrillón. Culture and History

The Way of Saint James through Castrillón is part of the Camino del Norte, which leads to Santiago de Compostela. The Museo de Anclas Philippe Cousteau stands on the La Peñona peninsula at one end of Playa de Salinas and is located near Castrillón.

Castrillón’s rural cultural heritage includes traditional Asturian houses, hórreos, paneras, mills, fountains and washhouses. Particularly representative hórreos and paneras decorated in the Carreño style can be found in Teboyas, Peñarrey and Llodares.

The Mina de Arnao is considered Europe’s only underwater mine and the oldest hard-coal mining site on the Iberian Peninsula. The Museo Alfercam, the Palacio de Camposagrado and the Museo de la Historia Urbana de Avilés are also located near Castrillón.

Paths and Recreational Areas

The Senda Verde del Agua is a path over 16 km long that begins at the recreational path of Pillarno. It crosses three aqueducts, including the aqueducts of Meruxeras and Meirones.

The Senda Costa Norte runs for around 18 km from San Juan de Nieva to Playón de Bayas, which is also known as El Sablón. It has been developed for hiking and cycling.

The Área Recreativa Pinar de Salinas has a barbecue area, picnic tables and drinking water and is accessible to people with reduced mobility. The Área Recreativa Pinos Altos can be reached on foot via the Senda Costa Norte from Arnao or Salinas, as well as by car, and offers a viewpoint overlooking Salinas and its beach.

The Área Recreativa Pulide has parking spaces, barbecue facilities, picnic tables, drinking-water fountains and a children’s play area. It is located at the highest point of the Sierra de Pulide and offers panoramic views from the mountains to the coast.

Cuisine

The cuisine in Castrillón uses fresh fish and seafood from the fishing port of Avilés, as well as meat, fruit, vegetables and pulses from valleys and plains.

Traditional food and drink in Castrillón include fabada, pote asturiano, fish and seafood from the Cantabrian Sea, and cider; typical desserts are frisuelos, rice pudding, requesón and casadielles.
