Culture and History

At the heart of Pravia’s history is the Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor. It was commissioned in 1715 by Fernando Ignacio Arango Queipo, the Bishop of Tuy, as part of a Baroque ensemble.

In Santianes de Pravia, the Church of San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista is the oldest surviving example of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture.

The Aula Museo Alberto Martínez in the former National Schools of Arango faithfully recreates classrooms from the 1930s and 1940s. Much of the furniture and school material dates from this period and is original.

Three historic routes from Pravia have been included in the heritage inventory as pilgrimage routes to Santiago and in the category of archaeological sites.

Nature and Paths

The waters of Pravia and its tributaries, including the Aranguín, have shaped a gentle landscape of open valleys and hills that do not exceed 700 metres.

The Mirador de El Cueto above the town of Pravia can be reached on foot via the Ruta de Los Marineros. The Ruta de senderismo de Los Marineros is an 8.4-kilometre circular hiking route.

The Molinos de La Veiga continue to mill in the traditional way using water power and have been in operation since 1890.

El Rincón de las Aves is now a centre open to visitors and also has a large garden with more than 400 plant varieties.

The rivers of Pravia are home to some of Asturias’s most renowned salmon pools; for this reason, recreational fishing is one of the municipality’s main attractions.

The 8.4 kilometres of the Ruta de senderismo de Los Marineros offer a different focus from a visit to the Mercado Tradicional: here, a longer route takes centre stage, while there is a fixed Thursday appointment there. The historic paths, river landscape and festival calendar thus offer different ways of getting to know Pravia through movement, history or local traditions.

Market and Festivals

The Mercado Tradicional de Pravia takes place throughout the year on Thursdays, including public holidays, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It offers produce from the vegetable gardens of the comarca as well as other quality goods.

The Xiringüelu-Romería takes place every summer at Prao Salcéu, on the first Sunday in August after the first Thursday in August. For Corpus Christi, the streets of Pravia are decorated with floral and ornamental carpets.
