The World Heritage Site “Monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of Asturias” comprises six Asturian pre-Romanesque buildings.

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Asturias can combine their search for accommodation with a personal interest in Tito Bustillo and the Picos de Europa.

Culture and History

In the immediate vicinity are the Archivo Histórico de Asturias, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias and the Museo Arqueológico de Asturias – three museums – as well as La Foncalada, a historic site. Also located nearby are Núcleo Zoológico El Bosque, a zoo, the Rodriga Garden and Campillín Garden, as well as Campo de San Francisco, a park.

Santa María del Naranco was completed in 842. Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture emerged with the rise of the Asturian monarchy from the 8th century onwards. The hill offers panoramic views of Oviedo.

The Tito Bustillo Cave is one of the most important sites of Palaeolithic art in Europe. It comprises 11 groups with more than 100 engraved and painted representations.

The Museo de la Minería y de la Industria de Asturias (MUMI) displays images of mining, machinery, minerals, and aspects of labour and mining history. The museum also includes a realistically recreated mine; individual visitors can visit it in groups organised by the museum.

The Museo de la Sidra de Asturias explores social traditions surrounding cider, including the Chigre, tonada, music, and the bagpipe. Through a participatory exhibition, it provides information about the production, consumption, and history of cider, as well as its social and cultural context.

Nature

The Picos de Europa National Park covers 646 km² and reaches a maximum elevation of 2,648 m at Torrecerredo in the Central Massif. Guided routes are offered in the national park; visitor centres are located in Casa Dago and at the Pedro Pidal Visitor Centre near the Lagos de Covadonga. The visitor routes mentioned in the Picos de Europa National Park include the Ruta del Cares and the Entrelagos Route.

Bosque de Muniellos is an integral nature reserve and Spain’s largest oak forest. Somiedo Nature Park was the first nature park designated in Asturias and is characterised by its lakes.

Routes and Access

The Camino del Norte runs for 280 kilometres through Asturias and passes through 23 municipalities; 13 stages are recommended. High-speed trains connect Madrid with Asturias several times a day.

Prior permission is required to access the Muniellos integral nature reserve. Access is currently limited to a maximum of 20 visitors per day. The river route in Muniellos is described as the easier of the two routes; the Fuenculebrera Route in Muniellos is described as the longer and more difficult route.
